FULLERTON — Nicole Ballestero scored 18 points to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Esther Timmermans added 15 points, Samantha Doucette had 13 points and Chelsea Alfafara finished with 10 points for Vanguard (14-1, 5-1 in conference) ranked No. 2 in the NAIA.

Hope International is 9-12, 1-5.

Long Beach State 71, UC Irvine 61

LONG BEACH — The host 49ers scored the final seven points to pull away in a Big West Conference game that featured 14 lead changes and seven tie scores on Saturday at Walter Pyramid.

Camille Buckley and Kelly Meggs had 11 points for UCI (4-15, 0-7 in conference), which received 10 points from Jennifer Tsurumoto.

Buckley, who was three for three from the field, had seven rebounds to share the team lead with Jasmine Bernard, who had eight points.

Long Beach State shot 52% in the second half, including four for seven from three-point range to improve to 11-8, 4-2.

Tsurumoto and Meggs (six assists) each had three three-pointers for UCI.

FULLERTON — Chris Gorman scored a game-high 34 points for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Preston Wynne added 24 points for Vanguard (13-8, 2-4)

Hope International (20-2, 5-1) is ranked No. 15 in the NAIA.

Boise State Jacksons Open

NAMPA, Idaho — Sophomore Itos Aikhionbare had the top finish for UC Irvine Saturday.

Aikhionbare finished second of 22 competitors in the shot put with a career-best mark of 47 feet, 9 ¾ inches, just edged out for first by Sacramento State’s Erinn Jones, who had a mark of 48-0 ½. UCI’s Lacey Surak finished 11th with a mark of 38-4.

In the mile run, UCI’s Samia Sailinuu (5 minutes, 17.05 seconds) and Chloe Fata (5:17.07) placed 18th and 19th, respectively. Makenna McGrann finished 28th (5:29.59) and Katie Kass was 34th in 5:46.34.

Marie Brashears finished 20th of 46 runners in the 400 meters in 60.33. Sakia Sailinuu was 25th in 60.56, Tiana Carter was 34th (62.67) and Kira Helmer placed 35th in 63.28.

The Anteaters’ Charity Lyons finished 25th overall in the 60-meter dash in 8.27, while Tatiana Martinez was 28th in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.34.

UCI returns to action Feb. 8-9 in the Husky Classic at Seattle, Wash.
