High School Roundup: Groves scores game-winner
FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Newport Harbor High freshman Peyton Groves scored the game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the Newport Harbor High girls’ soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Fountain Valley in Tuesday’s Sunset League match.
Sophomore Gema Sanchez and senior Courtney Buck each scored in regulation for Newport Harbor (3-10-2, 1-1 in league), which plays host to Huntington Beach at 4:45 p.m. Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior True Tamplin scored in the 77th minute for the Sailors in Wednesday’s Sunset League match at Newport Harbor High.
David Munoz’s shot was stopped by the Fountain Valley goalie, who dropped it, and Tamplin was there for the rebound.
Senior goalie Osiel Porcayo had three saves for Newport Harbor (9-5-3, 1-1-1 in league), which plays at Huntington Beach on Friday at 5 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Sea Kings senior Jack Nowak scored on a rebound for the equalizer in a Pacific Coast League opener Wednesday.
Sophomore goalie Gavin Allen made four saves in a scoreless first half, while junior Stone Boyser made two saves in the second half for CdM (5-5-3, 0-0-1 in league).
Senior Davis Case along with juniors Daniel McCabe and Jay Damon stood out on defense for the Sea Kings.
Corona del Mar will face Northwood in another Pacific Coast League match at Meadowood Park in Irvine Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor 12, Fountain Valley 1
NEWPORT BEACH — Seniors Carly Christian and Avery Peterson scored two goals each for the Sailors in their Sunset League match Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.
Christina O’Beck, Elissia Schilling, Carolyn Smith, Andie Strode, Chloe Glore, Maddie Goodell, Cleo Harrington and Chanel Schilling all added goals for Newport Harbor (9-3, 2-0 in league).
Harrington, Carlee Kapana and Chanel Schilling combined to make 11 saves in goal for the Sailors.
Newport Harbor travels to the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions this weekend. The Sailors, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, begin against Santiago of Corona on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Dos Pueblos High.

COSTA MESA — Kellie Thorsness and Aubry Hill each scored twice for the Mustangs in their Orange Coast League opener Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.
Hill also drew two exclusions and a five-meter penalty shot for Mesa (11-6, 0-1). Alicia Rederscheid, Lauren Smith and Melissa Folkerts each scored once.
Laguna Beach is ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

COSTA MESA — Senior Ilene Umansky scored 10 goals to pace the host Eagles in the nonleague game Wednesday.
Senior Alexis Paul had nine saves for the Eagles (9-6).
Estancia takes on Fullerton on Friday at 3:50 p.m. at Orange High as part of the Santa Ana Valley tournament.

NEWPORT BEACH — Robbie Rettig scored 20 points for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.
Kevin Rakestraw had 17 points, 18 rebounds and two blocks, and Zach Wade had eight assists for Newport Harbor (9-9, 0-2 in league).
The Sailors play at Huntington Beach in another Sunset League game on Friday at 7 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Seniors Paul Nguyen (138 pounds) and Taylor Matteson (220) were among six Sea Kings who recorded pins in the Pacific Coast League match Wednesday.
Juniors Chris Croxton (119) and Adam Reines (132), as well as sophomore Chris Park (182) and freshman Chris Camarillo (106) also scored pins for CdM (14-3).
Juniors Brian Goldstone (145) and Kaden Ebbinga (152), and sophomore Ruslan Eynullaev (160) also scored wins for the Sea Kings.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Freshman Alain Ward (106 pounds) recorded a pin in 3:47 for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Wednesday.
Sophomore Dominic Kosecki (113) earned a 13-11 win in overtime and senior Virgilio Martinez (126) scored a 7-4 decision for Newport Harbor (9-3, 0-2 in league), which will face Huntington Beach Jan. 17 at the Sailors’ gym.
