The Laguna Beach High football team is wrapping up its first full week of fall camp Friday. It’s the first steps for the program and new head Coach Ted Clarke in preparation for a 2015 season that begins in just two weeks.

The Breakers opened camp Monday with two-a-days.

“These kids are such intelligent young men and have been working hard,” Clarke said. “They want to learn and execute what we are teaching them. We are seeing progress and see that they kids want to be successful. As a coach, that’s all you can as for.”

The football program didn’t have spring training and had a short summer session. Laguna took part in two passing tournaments last month, and the Los Altos 7 on 7 Passing Tournament on July 24, where the Breakers went 2-2, marked the end of summer camp.

At the start of fall camp Monday, Clarke said the Breakers were 26 players strong at both the varsity and frosh levels. The Breakers have alternated between single-and two-a-day workouts this week, and practice twice Friday. On Saturday, they will hold Picture Day and run an inter-squad scrimmage that Clarke said will start at approximately 11 a.m.

They continue with two-a-day practices Monday and Wednesday and single sessions Tuesday and Thursday of next week. They will get a taste of outside competition on Aug. 21 when they take part in a four-way scrimmage at Fullerton Sunny Hills High. The scrimmage includes the Breakers, host Sunny Hills, Pico Rivera El Rancho, and La Puente Workman.

Their final week of practice starts Aug. 24 and leads to their season opener Aug. 28 at Guyer Field against Cerritos Valley Christian.

Clarke said players are still vying for positions.

“Every young man on our team is important to us,” he said. “Each has been working really hard to get ready for the season.”

The football team is one of six Laguna teams who have or are a few days away from prepping for the fall sports season.

Girls’ Volleyball

Training camp closes Friday with tryouts slated in the afternoon, Coach Raul Papaleo said.

The Breakers will compete Aug. 22-23 at the Queens of the Court Tournament at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim. They begin regular-season play Sept. 3 at Santa Margarita.

Girls’ Golf

The Breakers will practice into the final week of the month before finalizing their 2015 roster. Among the teams they will face in nonleague match play are Dana Hills, Sage Hill and Capistrano Valley Christian.

Girls’ Tennis

The Breakers, who had a six-week summer camp end Thursday, will hold tryouts Monday through Thursday next week.

The Breakers scrimmage JSerra Sept. 2 and open their regular season Sept. 3 with a home match against Mission Viejo.

Cross-Country

The girls’ and boys’ teams are in training mode for their 2015 seasons.

The Laguna girls will go on a camp retreat Saturday through Thursday in Mammoth. The Breakers compete in their first race of the fall season Sept. 5 at the Gaucho Invitational at UC Santa Barbara.

The Laguna boys, who end camp Aug. 28, also will go on a camp retreat starting Sunday in Big Bear. The Breakers also start their race season Sept. 5 competing at the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.

Boys’ Water Polo

The Breakers open fall camp Monday. They scrimmage Foothill and Riverside Poly Sept. 2 at Foothill High, and begin their regular season Sept. 10 at the Santa Barbara Tournament.
