Laguna blanks Century to close out summer
The summer season has come to a close for the Laguna Beach High baseball program.
The Breakers ended their eight-game season July 29 against Century. They closed out their camp with strong pitching performances that keyed a 3-0 win over the visiting Centurions.
Among the Laguna pitchers seeing action was Blake Burzell who threw two innings.
The Breakers started their summer session in late-June. Coach Mike Bair deemed the season a “roller coaster ride.”
“A mixture of good and bad throughout each game,” he said.
Laguna started summer play June 30 and played twice a week through July, taking on the likes of Orange Lutheran, Sage Hills, Beckman, Troy, Ocean View, Brea Olinda and Woodbridge before closing against Century.
As for the Breakers’ offense, Bair said it had “quality at-bats” but “needs to improve and execute.”
In the field, it was a mixed bag.
“Defense wasn’t comfortable and made too many mental mistakes,” he said. “Pitching was decent at times. Some standout pitchers were Blake Burzell, Ashton Goddard, and Grady Morgan.
“We will work hard in the fall and winter and prepare for 2016 with high expectations to win and compete at the highest level,” Bair said.

Seven teams contended in pool play and single-elimination bracket games. The team of Jesse Obrand, Chris Sirianni, Bob Jameson, Frank Shojaei, Andrew Levin and Brandon Lewis won the tourney title.
“It was a really competitive tournament and the teams were pretty evenly matched,” Fleming said. “It was a fun day and it was great to see all these guys again.
