In the past week, the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team faced two teams that reached the CIF Southern Section Division 1A championship game last March at The Honda Center in Anaheim.

The Breakers went 2-1 overall in three games.

Laguna competed Monday at the Godinez Summer League. The Breakers took on Edison and came away with a 58-53 victory.

The Chargers were co-champions of the Sunset League and were runners-up in CIF-SS Division 1A.

“It was a nice win and I thought we played OK, but they (Edison) were short-handed and missing a few starters,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said. “Edison always is really solid and I thought we did a good job in certain areas. We pretty much led the entire game and they made a run at us in the end.”

Laguna won for the 15th time in summer play and improved to 15-5.

The Breakers were playing for the eighth time in nine days.

Edison, which was led in scoring by Hayden Siva, Jake Barton and Kyle McCauley, lost for only the fourth time in 25 summer games.

Prior to taking on Edison, Laguna faced Foothill, the 2015 CIF-SS Division 1AA champion, and defeated the Knights (score not available) July 10 in Dana Hills Summer League play. The Breakers were short-handed for this game, Fleming said. Starters Blake Burzell and Isaac Wulff didn’t play, and Charlie Rounaghi was ill.

“I would say that this game was probably our best performance of the summer and thought it was a really good win,” Fleming said. “Foothill is a very good team, has a good program and is well-coached.

‘Defensively, we worked our tails off. We got stops and boxed out, and got our transition game going. We did a great job of running the court.”

Less than 24 hours later, Laguna and Foothill met again in an opening game of the Concordia Tournament July 10 at Concordia University in Irvine. This time, the Knights won the game (score not available).

“Again, we were short-handed but played well the whole game and lost by eight points,” Fleming said. “I was pleased with our effort.”

The Breakers finished the tournament on a three-game winning streak, defeating an Amateur Athletic Union team from Claremont, Fresno Selma and Irvine.

Laguna concludes its summer season with two games Monday at the Godinez Summer League.

“I’m happy with how we have done this summer,” Fleming said. “We’ve got some kids who had made great strides. We’re basically a senior- and sophomore-laden team, and I’m really pleased with the way our seniors have come out and shown their leadership abilities.”

Baseball

The Breakers traveled Monday to Fullerton to take on Troy in summer action (no score kept). Will McInerny homered for the Breakers and didn’t allow an earned run in one inning pitched.

Laguna Coach Mike Bair said the Breakers “still need to improve on all facets of the game.”
