Laguna boys’ hoops team has hot start in summer
The Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team got off to a hot start in summer play.
The Breakers battled their way through seven games in a five-day period in games played at the Corona del Mar Tournament, Godinez Summer League and Dana Hills Summer League. They won six of those seven games.
At the CdM tourney, which started Saturday, the Breakers defeated Glendora and lost to Oak Hills. On Sunday, they beat both Sultana and Brea Olinda.
The Breakers began summer league play Monday at Godinez and opened with a win over Santa Ana. Tuesday at the Dana Hills League, they beat the host Dolphins with Nick Rahder’s three-point shot from half court at the buzzer. Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said the “whole team mobbed him” after Rahder’s shot broke a tie score.
Dana Hills had just tied the score on three free throws after the Dolphins were fouled on a three-point shot attempt.
The Breakers also defeated Segerstrom Tuesday.
“Guys have been playing hard and getting better, understanding what it takes to compete and to win,” Fleming said. “Nick Rahder has been great, easily our most improved player since the end of last season. Darin Richardson is also playing well, he had eight three-pointers against Sultana. We’ve also gotten great play from Spencer Wong, Charlie Rounaghi and Adam Armstrong.”
The Breakers will play league games on Mondays and Wednesdays at Godinez, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Dana Hills.
