Briefs: Physicals offered
South Coast Medical Group will offer sports physicals to incoming Laguna Beach High athletes for the 2014-15 school year from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the school.
Students who plan on participating in Laguna Beach High athletics are required by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to have a sports physical with clearance.
The cost per physical is $40, with $25 of that fee going to the Laguna Beach High School Athletic Boosters.

Cardiac screenings start Tuesday
Heartfelt Cardiac Projects is teaming up with Laguna Beach High School Athletic Boosters to offer cardiac screenings Tuesday and Wednesday for Laguna Beach High students and their families.
Screenings will be available between 3 and 6 p.m. both days at the school’s north gym and are offered for a donation of $85 per person (ages five and older).

Laguna Open coming
The 59th annual Men’s Laguna Open, sponsored by The Deck on Laguna Beach, Pacific Edge Hotel, Driftwood Restaurant, Bud Light and Wilson and in partnership with the California Beach Volleyball Assn. and City of Laguna Beach, is June 7-8 at Main Beach.
The two-day, double-elimination tournament will include a maximum of 28 teams playing on six courts. The top 24 ranked teams to sign up before the 4 p.m. June 5 deadline, are guaranteed entry. The remaining four tournament spots are saved for the top-ranked local Laguna Beach teams that sign up. The prize purse is $4,000.

U.S. Water Polo
Laguna Beach’s Nolan McConnell scored one goal and the USA Men’s National Team opened the FINA Intercontinental Tournament Wednesday with a 14-4 victory over China at Shanghai, China.
McConnell (Laguna Beach High/Long Beach St.) was one of eight players to score goals for Team USA which was led by Bret Bonanni (Mater Dei/Stanford) who posted four goals.
McConnell also scored once for Team USA which defeated China “B”, 14-7, in an exhibition match played during the tournament.
The tournament continues through Sunday.
At the Women’s FINA Intercontinental Tournament at Riverside Aquatics Complex, Team USA suffered its first loss when it fell, 7-5, to Australia in the gold medal match Sunday. Despite the loss, Team USA, whose roster includes Makenzie Fischer of Laguna Beach High, joins Australia, Canada, China and Brazil, as qualifiers for the FINA World League Super Final next month in China.
Fischer scored two goals May 23 as Team USA routed Venezuela, 17-1, to gain a semifinal berth. The Laguna junior scored two more goals during a 14-10 semifinal win Saturday against China that sent Team USA on to the tournament title match.
