Sports physicals offered at Laguna

Sports physicals for Laguna Beach High student-athletes will be performed by South Coast Medical Group on the Laguna Beach campus between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday and Thursday.

The cost is $40 per physical, and South Coast Medical Group will donate $25 back to the Laguna Beach High Boosters Club. Checks should be made payable to “SCMG.”

Laguna Beach High students who wish to participate in school athletics are required by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to have a sports physical with clearance.

AVP season opens in New Orleans

The 2015 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour season got underway last weekend, and a pair of familiar teams won their respective tournaments at the AVP New Orleans Open.

In Sunday’s women’s final, three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach) and silver medalist April Ross (Costa Mesa), the top-seeded team, won their eighth consecutive AVP tour tournament by defeating third-seeded Jennifer Kessy(Laguna Beach)/Emily Day(Hermosa Beach), 21-16, 22-20.

Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach and partner Jenny Kropp (Manhattan Beach), the No. 4-seed, finished equal-fifth place. The pair fell to Kessy/Day who advanced to the semifinals.

Top-seeds Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach)/Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) won the men’s title Sunday. The duo topped second-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Newbury Park)/Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach), 23-21, 21-14, in the final to win their fourth straight tour tournament.

The AVP will host the Federation Internationale de Volleyball St. Petersburg (Fla.) Grand Slam, an Olympic qualifying tournament part of the FIVB Volleyball World Tour, June 15-21. The next AVP tournament is the New York City Open July 16-19.
