High School Roundup: Breakers have record-setting meet

The Laguna Beach High swim teams continue to impress in the first month of the 2015 season.

The Breakers competed last Saturday at the Mission Viejo Invitational where they continued to set CIF Southern Section qualifying times, 13 new times in all, and broke three school records at the meet. The Laguna boys placed seventh in their division, and the girls’ team was 13th in its competition.

Combined, Laguna had an overall 11th-place team finish among 41 teams.

The school records were set by Erik Juliusson in the 100 freestyle (45.91), the boys’ 200 free relay team of Max Morgan, Cameron Karkosa, Cade Baldridge and Juliusson (1:27.96), and freshman diver Liv Mitchell, who scored 456.95 points and qualified for the CIF Division 2 meet at the end of the season.

Qualifying times also were set by the following Breakers: Aria Fischer (girls’ 200 free, 2:02.01); Harper Dix (girls’ 50 free, 25.59); Kasey Karkoska (girls’ 100 backstroke, 58.49); Abby Cohn (girls’ 100 breaststroke, 1:10.90); Ben Greenwood (boys’ 200 free, 1:49.91, and 500 free, 4:57.50); Erik Juliusson (boys’ 200 individual medley, 1:49.68); Cameron Karkoska (boys’ 200 IM, 1:55.33); Cade Baldridge (boys’ 50 free, 22.74), Nolan Del Toro (boys’ 50 free, 22.62), and Max Morgan (50 free, 22.23, and 100 breaststroke, 1:00.29).

“This meet was a huge success for our team,” Laguna Co-Coach Beth Weber said. “All of our swimmers did extremely well and their results show just how strong they will be at CIF this year. Kari (co-Coach Kari Damato) and I are so proud of our team’s accomplishments last Saturday.”

After spring break, Laguna is back in the pool April 15 for a 3 p.m. league meet at Estancia.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers won their first two matches in Orange Coast League play, defeating Costa Mesa and Saddleback.

On Tuesday, Laguna’s league match win streak hit 60 (152 straight sets) and remained undefeated all-time (9-0) against Saddleback after its 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 win over the host Roadrunners. Middle blocker Tyler Alter had 12 kills, outside hitter Dane Olson 10 kills and eight digs, opposite Nick Rieckhoff and libero Adam Lythgoe each had eight digs, and setter Isaac Wulff 26 assists.

The Breakers, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 2, improved to 6-3 overall.

In a league match March 26 at Costa Mesa, Laguna scored a 25-7, 25-17, 25-16 win over the Mustangs. Olson had 14 kills and Wulff 26 assists as the Breakers improved to 65-1 all-time against the Mustangs.

Laguna took on Estancia in league play Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. It was the Breakers’ final match before heading into spring break. They return to the court April 14 for a 5:15 p.m. home league match against Calvary Chapel.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers won their fourth consecutive match, each coming in Orange Coast League play, by defeating visiting Calvary Chapel, 180-221, Wednesday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course (par 32). The Breakers’ John Grayden was the low medalist at two-under-par 30. Kyle Sharp followed with a personal-best score of 35.

“The guys played well all week and captured some really important wins for us on our home course,” Coach Scott Finn said.

In a league match Tuesday at Ben Brown’s. Laguna scored a 177-250 win over Costa Mesa. Grayden was low medalist with a one-under-par 31. Drake Dvorak, Will Uzelac and Max Brown each shot 36.

Grayden also was medalist with an even par-36 when the Breakers defeated host Estancia, 210-217, March 26 at Mesa Verde Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

The Breakers return to action April 14 when they travel to face Calvary Chapel at 4 p.m. at Mile Square Park Golf Course in Fountain Valley.

Boys’ Tennis

The Breakers, No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 4, picked up a 12-6 nonleague win Wednesday over host Dana Hills. Laguna’s No. 1 doubles team of Zack Washer/Sterling Dudley-Bowen won by sweep, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 2 team of Ethan Gee/Tristan Krogius (2-6, 6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 team of Hayden Seitz/Ryan Gee (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) won two sets.

In singles action, No. 1 Charles Keller (2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0) and No. 3 Stuart Webb (0-6, 6-3, 6-1), also won two sets.

Laguna (8-2 overall) improved to 2-0 in Orange Coast League play March 26 when it eased past host Estancia, 15-3. The Breakers swept doubles action behind the play of Ethan Gee/Krogius (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), Dudley-Bowen/Jake Robbins (6-2, 6-2, 6-1), and Seitz/Clayton Haines (6-0, 6-1, 6-1). Keller also swept at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-0, 6-0), and Webb, at No. 2, swept by 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 scores.

The Breakers are off from action until April 14 when they take on Godinez in a 3:15 p.m. league match at Saddleback High.

Track and Field

The Laguna boys’ team will compete Friday at the Trabuco Hills Invitational, and the girls’ team will be in Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational.
