Thurston second in surfing event
The Thurston Middle School surf team competed in Event No. 4 of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Scholastic Surf Series Saturday at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Thurston which put 16 surfers in the finals, placed second in the team standings behind San Clemente Shorecliffs. Highlights for Thurston included Kayla Coscino and Liv Stokes taking first place in the Division I Girls’ Shortboard and Girls’ Longboard divisions, respectively, and Cole Fink placing first in Division 1 Bodyboard.
Division 1 finalists for Thurston, coached by Jeff Both and Bobby Lockhart, were:
Boys’ Shortboard: Travis Booth, third; Liam McCue, sixth.
Boys’ Longboard: Jamison Roller, third.
Girls’ Shortboard: Kayla Coscino, first; Kelly Smith, third; Claire Kelly, fifth.
Girls’ Longboard: Liv Stokes, first; Lola Fisher fifth.
Bodyboard: Cole Fink, first.
Division II finalists for Thurston, coached by Chris Williams, were:
Boys’ Shortboard: Ryan Magee, third; Luke Smialowicz, fourth.
Boys’ Longboard: Gaal Shonefeld, fifth; Alex Wick, sixth.
Girls’ Shortboard: Tess Booth, second; Isabella Peterson, third.
Girls’ Longboard: Grace Fink, second.
