Track and Field: Laguna meet attracts 1,900
The Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational is in the books. Saturday’s event, run for the 46th time and held at Guyer Field and the Eric Hulst Track, drew one of its largest fields of competitors.
“The Trophy Invite was the most successful invite since we revived it six years ago,” Laguna Coach Steve Lalim said. “We had nearly 50 teams, and over 1,900 athletes compete, (and) eight meet records were broken.
“The meet was filled with great competition, good weather, and it was a lot of fun.”
Laguna athletes turned in outstanding performances in the girls’ varsity competition Saturday.
Coco Putnam won the 400 meter dash (58.61 seconds) and 300 meter hurdles (46.03), Pearl Shoemaker placed third (5:11.37) in the 1,600, the 4 x 100 relay team (Regan Caraher, Amy Hewlett, Rose Niejermier, Putnam) took third (51.34), the 4 x 400 relay team (Caraher, Putnam, Natalie Kimball, Hewlett) placed second (4:07.34), Jackie Cenan was third (35-2 3/4) in the shot put and fifth (103-5) in the discus, Kendall House sixth in the shot put, and Paige Vitolo was third (32-9 1/4) in the triple jump.
The Laguna girls finished in third place in the varsity team standings. Dana Hills won the division. Amanda Gehrich of Tesoro won the girls’ Eric Hulst 3,200 meter run in 10:33.99.
The Laguna boys finished in 33rd place in the varsity team standings, a division also won by Dana Hills. For the Breakers, Charles Warner was eighth (16.46) in the 110 meter hurdles, Andrew Humpries 10th (42.51) in the 300 meter hurdles, and Cameron Zuziak 10th (4:39.77) in the 1,600. Devon Reed of Jurupa Hills won the boys’ Eric Hulst 3,200 meter run in 9:10.13.
At the frosh/soph level, Laguna’s girls’ team placed 25th. Trabuco Hills won the division.
Basic (Nevada) won the boys’ frosh/soph team title.
