Thurston surf team takes second place
A team of nine Thurston Middle School students earned second place at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. State Championships over the weekend in San Onofre.
In addition, Kayla Coscino took second in girls shortboard and Kelly Smith took third.
This was the first time Thurston has entered a team, according to a news release. The second-place finish qualifies the team for the nationals, set for June at Salt Creek Beach, where the local competitors will surf against schools from Hawaii and the East Coast.
In addition to Kayla and Kelly, Thurston’s team was composed of Travis Booth, Trey Lockhart, Liam McCue, Kiko Nelsen, Sam Nelsen, Nolan Rodgers and Jameson Roller. Jeff Booth and Bobby Lockhart served as coaches.
