Rain, Peninsula end Laguna’s season
The Laguna Beach girls’ tennis team had its season end Saturday in an 11-1 second-round loss to second-ranked Peninsula in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff match cut short by rain.
The Breakers, who repeated as Orange Coast League champions under first-year Coach Don Davis, started postseason play Nov. 10 and downed visiting Northwood, 11-7. Laguna won six of nine singles sets.
League singles champion Lauren Michaels swept at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. The Breakers’ No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Michaels and Kira Hamilton also swept by scores of 7-6, 7-5, 7-5. In other singles action, No. 2 Claire Jaeger won two of three (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 Stephanie Tat won one of three (6-3, 9-6, 0-6).

Cross-Country
Both the Laguna boys’ and girls’ teams advanced to run Saturday’s finals of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Cross-Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
The boys’ team, coached by Scott Wittkop, placed seventh during the prelims last week at Mt. SAC. The girls’ team, coached by Steve Lalim, was third.
Laguna results from Saturday’s prelims are as follows:
Boys: Jeff White, 15:23; Veda Rebollar, 16:11; Jack Crawford, 16:11; Tyler Nichols, 16:23; Grant Barton, 16:30; Stone Riff, 16:32; Timmy Williams, 16:54.
Girls: Natasha Strickland, 17:33: Janie Crawford, 18:55; Eliza Romero, 19:01; Marisa Merchant, 19:11; Carlee Ressler, 19:28; Kay Baskevitch, 19:31; Monica White, 20:13.
The Division 4 girls’ final starts at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The boys’ final is at 8:25 a.m.
