Pitz second at NSSA event
Laguna Beach High surfer Taylor Pitz finished second in the Open Women’s Division on Sunday at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Southwest Conference Open Season’s fifth contest at the Huntington Beach Pier. Pitz was second to Kulia Doherty of San Clemente.
The Open Women’s final featured Pitz, the division’s ratings leader, Doherty, Tia Blanco of San Clemente and Reika Noro of Carpinteria. Pitz held down the lead for a majority of the 25-minute final, but a late charge by Doherty, who came up with a 6.10 wave score, allowed her to claim her first Open Women’s victory of the season.
Doherty scored a 12.10 to finish first and Pitz scored 11.40. Blanco took third place with a 9.47 score and Noro (8.97) was fourth. Doherty also won the Open Girls division and was named the Performer of the Event for the weekend.
The next NSSA Southwest Conference Open Season contest is Nov. 20 and 21 at the 54th Street Jetty in Newport Beach.
