Breakers crack CIF football poll

The Laguna Beach High football team started the 2011 season unnoticed, but following three straight wins the Breakers are getting some recognition.

Laguna made its way into this week’s CIF Southern Section Southern Division rankings, coming in at No. 8. The Breakers and No. 9 Rancho Alamitos (3-0) are the only two undefeated teams in the poll. Defending Southern Division champion Beckman, at 1-2, leads the poll. Spots two through seven went to Corona del Mar (3-1), Northwood (1-2), Woodbridge (2-2), Segerstrom (2-2), Garden Grove (1-2) and Irvine (2-1). The No. 10 spot went to Laguna’s Orange Coast League rival, Estancia (2-2).

In boys’ water polo, Laguna continues at No. 1 in Division 3. Following the Breakers are Damien, Aliso Niguel, Palos Verdes, La Canada, Mira Costa, Capistrano Valley, Santa Monica, Peninsula and Tesoro.

The top three slots in the girls’ volleyball Division 1-A poll belong to the same teams, with Laguna coming in at No. 3. Marymount tops the poll, with Corona del Mar at No. 2. Making up the remainder of the poll is Vista Murrieta, Valencia/Valencia, Notre Dame Academy, El Dorado, Saugus, Canyon/Anaheim and Yucaipa.

Laguna’s boys’ cross-country team is ranked sixth in Division 4. Don Bosco Tech remains at No. 1 and is followed by Crespi, Salesian, Big Bear, JSerra, Laguna, Nordhoff, Harvard/Westlake, Twentynine Palms and Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks.

Boys & Girls Club hoops registration is open

In-house registration is under way for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach Boys’ Basketball League at the club’s main branch, 1085 Laguna Canyon Rd.

Player evaluations will take place starting Monday through Oct. 14. Practices start Oct. 31 and the season officially starts Dec. 6. All participants must be members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.

Club membership for youth ages 6-18 is $150 per year. The Boys & Girls Club Basketball League fee is $100 per player and includes a uniform. A $25 late fee will apply to registrations received after Sept. 30. Annual League sponsorship opportunities are available for $500 and include a personalized banner hung in the club’s gymnasium. Breakers softball fundraiser is Oct. 16

The Laguna Beach High softball program will hold a fundraising dinner Oct. 16 at Lumberyard Restaurant, 384 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach. The event is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Patrons who mention that they are there to support the softball program will have 20% of their bill donated to the program. Laguna players will be working the restaurant between 5 and 9 p.m. A silent auction will be held and prizes offered. Reservations are recommended. For more information, call (949) 715-3900.
