Club volleyball tryouts are Saturday
Main Beach Laguna Volleyball Club will be holding free open tryouts for boys ages 13 to 18 Saturday at Saddleback College. All club teams will play in Southern California Volleyball Assn. fall season tournaments. For more information, call (949) 637-6467.

Youth basketball tryouts set for Sept. 20
Laguna Beach National Junior Basketball (NJB) will hold tryouts for local youth for the upcoming winter NJB season Sept. 20 at the Thurston Middle School gymnasium.
Tryout times for each division are as follows: Boys’ and Girls’ Div. 4 (second-grade) and Boys’ Div. 3 (grades 3/4), 5 to 5:45 p.m.; all girls’ divisions (Div. 3, grades 3/4; Div. 2, grades 5/6; Div. 1, grades 7/8), 6 to 6:45 p.m.; Boys’ Div. 2 (grades 5/6) and Boys’ 5th-Grade and 6th-Grade All-Net, 7 to 7:45 p.m., and Boys’ 7th-Grade and 8th-Grade All-Net, 8 to 8:45 p.m.
Team practices begin in mid-October and are held once a week at Thurston. Games will be played every weekend, primarily on Saturdays, beginning in December through mid-March 2011. The cost for the season is $225 per player for NJB divisional play and $175 for All-Net players. Payment is due at the time of registration. Laguna teams rank high in CIF polls
The Laguna Beach High boys’ water polo team opens the 2010 season today as the No. 1 team in the CIF Southern Section preseason Division 3 rankings. The water polo team, which hits the road to face Villa Park — No. 4 in the Division 2 preseason poll — is one of five Laguna teams to enter the new school year with a lofty ranking.
The football team, which hosts Northwood today in the season opener for both schools, is No. 4 in the Southern Division poll. The boys’ cross-country team, which won CIF and State championships last year, is No. 2 in the Division 4 preseason poll, and the girls’ cross-country team is No. 8 in the Division 4 preseason poll.
Both teams begin the season Saturday at the Laguna Hills Invitational. The girls’ volleyball team begins its campaign Tuesday as preseason No. 2 in Division I-A and hosts Newport Harbor, the No. 2 preseason pick in Division 1-AA.
