Dries helps Team USA to gold
The USA Women’s National Water Polo team, which includes 2009 Laguna Beach High graduate Annika Dries, won the gold medal at the FINA World Cup Sunday at Christchurch, New Zealand.
Dries scored a goal in the title game to help Team USA defeat Australia, 6-3. It was the USA’s first gold medal at the event since winning the championship in Merced, CA., in 1979.
Dries scored off a feed from Elsie Windes (Portland, OR.) in the second quarter to push Team USA to a 5-0 lead. Team USA led, 6-0, at the half.
Dries also scored a goal during Team USA’s 10-9 semifinal victory over China.
Since winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, the USA Women’s National Team has won the championship in every major tournament in which it has competed. The team has now won two FINA World League Super Finals, a FINA World Championship and FINA World Cup.

Lewis makes it two in a row
Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach won his second race in as many weeks when he rode to victory at All American Speedway at Roseville, CA., Saturday. Lewis finished second in his heat then participated in and won the four-lap Trophy Dash that featured the four fastest qualifiers. It was his second trophy dash win in two weeks.
In the final event of the competition for the Focus Midgets, a 30-lap feature starting 14 cars, he won the race by five car lengths. Lewis, who two weeks ago won at the Orange Show Speedway, started classes Monday at Cal State Fullerton where he is entering his sophomore year. On Tuesday, he left for Europe for two rounds of Formula BMW Europe racing at the famous Spa Circuit in Belgium. Lewis will conclude his Formula BMW Europe race season Sept. 11-12 at Monza, Italy.

Laguna football scrimmages Thursday
The Laguna Beach High football team will host University of Irvine in a scrimmage at 3 p.m. Thursday at Guyer Field. The Breakers begin their 10-game regular-season schedule on Sept. 10 with a 7 p.m. home nonleague game against Northwood.

Club volleyball tryout date set
Main Beach Laguna Volleyball Club will be holding free open tryouts for boys ages 13 to 18 Sept. 11 at Saddleback College. All club teams will play in Southern California Volleyball Assn. fall season tournaments. For more information, call (949) 637-6467.
