Locals help club team to title

Two members of the Laguna Beach High water polo team, Jessie Holechek and Yoshi Andersen, played for the Huntington Beach Water Polo Club 18-and-Under girls’ “Blue” team that won its division at the Southern Pacific Zone Qualification Tournament on Sunday.

The event is a qualifying tournament for the upcoming 2011 Junior Olympics Water Polo Tournament.

Huntington Beach was the No. 1-seed in the tournament, which is considered the strongest and most competitive zone in the country.

The team’s biggest test of the tournament came in Sunday’s finals against Chino Hills (CHAWP). Huntington trailed, 4-1, in the first quarter but came back and won the game on a skip shot from mid-pool by Eike Daube (Long Beach Wilson High, Sr.) that went into the high corner of the goal and beat the buzzer resulting in an 11-10 win.

Holechek, a senior, will attend Princeton in the fall. Andersen will enter her senior year at Laguna in September.
