Breakers end regular season with high rankings

The Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball, boys’ tennis and baseball teams each earned high rankings in the final CIF Southern Section polls of the regular season.

Laguna is ranked second in the Division 2 boys’ volleyball poll, behind Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings and Breakers are the top two seeds in the CIF-SS playoffs.

Laguna moved up a spot to No. 2 in the Division 4 boys’ tennis poll. Viewpoint tops the rankings. The Breakers are the No. 2 seed in the Division 4 playoffs.

Laguna stayed put at No. 4 in the Division 4 baseball poll, but Palm Desert overtook Bishop Amat at the No. 1 position. Bishop Amat, which had occupied the top spot for the more than a month, slipped to second. Torrance is ranked third.

Dries again on USA Women’s Senior National roster

Former Laguna Beach High standout Annika Dries has been named to the Women’s Senior National Water Polo team will compete at several upcoming tournaments. Dries, who plays center, was also on the team’s 2010 roster. Among the tournaments the team will participate in is the FINA World League Super Finals Prelims and FINA World League Super Final.

Coach Adam Krikorian and this group of 15 will first compete in two matches against Canada in the FINA World League Prelims at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach on May 20 and 21.

Laguna aquatics fundraiser is May 22

Laguna Beach High’s aquatics program is holding a fundraiser for its water polo and swim programs May 22. The event begins with water polo action, relay races and a raffle from 2 to 6 p.m. From 5 to 10 p.m., dinner, dancing and a live band will take place at Sandpiper in Laguna Beach. The cost is $25 per high school player and $40 per spectator (must be 21 or older to attend the Sandpiper festivities). There is no cost for youth ages 14 and under.
