Two Breakers advance to CIF Individuals

Two Laguna Beach golfers earned top-five finishes Wednesday as the 2011 Golden West League boys’ golf tournament came to an end at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.

Andrew Palmer finished third and teammate Tim Peterson was fifth. Palmer and Peterson made first-team all-league and advanced to play in the first round of the CIF Individuals tournament May 16 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Palmer and Peterson both shot 74 and Mossimo Giau shot 81 at the prelims tournament Monday at Los Lagos Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

Jake Knapp of Estancia won the league’s individual title.

Boys’ Tennis

Laguna had all three of its singles players and doubles teams in Thursday’s Orange Coast League tournament final, which was played at the Laguna courts.

Thursday’s singles semifinals pitted Laguna teammates Benito Romeo and Teague Hamilton against one another. The winner of that match advanced to take on the winner of the match between Laguna’s Jake Michaels and Costa Mesa’s Alex Adams.

One of the two doubles semifinals has Laguna’s No. 2 team of Austin Loomis/Owen Weber going up against its No. 3 team of Taylor Davidson/Nick Le. The other semifinal has the Breakers’ top team of Hutton McKenna/Morgan Lebby taking on Costa Mesa’s No. 1 team of Benny Quinonez/Tam Le.

Swimming

Laguna athletes advanced from Tuesday’s Orange Coast League prelims to Thursday’s league finals at Costa Mesa High.

“We looked very strong in prelims and had many considerable time drops that shocked some of the swimmers,” Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said. “I look forward to them swimming even faster on Thursday.

“Our goal is to be league champions for the third (boys) and fourth (girls) year in a row.”

Turning in outstanding swims Tuesday for Laguna were Billy Wild, who established two school and meet records in the 200 individual medley (two minutes, 2.23 seconds) and 100 butterfly (53.60); Spencer Dodson in the 200 free (1:55.68) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.02); Nile Koegel in the 50 free (23.41); Erik Henrikson in the 50 free (23.50, new CIF cut); Tyler Mancuso in the 100 fly (57.91, new CIF cut); Nolan McConnell in the 100 free (50.60) and 100 backstroke (58.52); Nicky Brunner in the 100 free (52.42); Jordan Wills in the 100 back (1:02.23, new CIF cut); Tommy Renner in the 200 IM (2:11.39, new CIF cut) and 100 breast (1:07.97, new CIF cut); Paige Watroba in the 200 IM (2:28.89, new CIF cut); Yoshi Andersen in the 50 free (25.87) and 100 free 56.38); Lila Vera in the 100 fly (58.39) and 100 back (1:00.27); Taylor Capobianco in the 100 free (57.96) and Melena Masson in the 500 free (5:28.19).

Laguna was well-represented Thursday at the Orange Coast League finals at Estancia High.
