Breakers remain perfect in league
The Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball team picked up its fourth Orange Coast League victory in as many matches Tuesday by sweeping visiting Estancia, 25-12, 25-14, 25-19.
The win, which put Laguna at 11-10 overall, was the Breakers’ second sweep of Estancia (0-16, 0-3) in league play. They previously defeated the Eagles on March 29 in the league opener for both teams. Robbie McKnight and Austin Hilleman had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jack Winn had 29 set assists.
Laguna also was a winner by sweep March 31 against Calvary Chapel, beating the visiting Eagles, 25-11, 25-17, 25-12, in a match both teams entered 2-0 in league. McKnight had 17 kills, Winn 30 set assists and Troy Donenfeld 16 digs.
The Breakers again take on Calvary Chapel on Monday in a 5:30 p.m. road match to begin the second half of their league schedule. They’ll also host Godinez at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys’ Tennis
The Breakers improved to 3-0 in Orange Coast League play March 31 by defeating host Costa Mesa, 17-1.
Jake Michaels, Benito Romeo and Teague Hamilton won all singles sets by 6-0 scores. The top two doubles teams of Taylor Davidson/Morgan Lebby (6-4, 6-0, 6-1) and Austin Loomis/Owen Weber (6-2, 6-0, 6-1), won by sweep. The No. 3 Conrad Reeves/Nick Le won two of three (5-7, 6-1, 6-1).
In a previous league match March 30, Laguna blanked visiting Estancia, 18-0.
Laguna hosts Santa Margarita on Friday (3:15 p.m.) and Cerritos on Monday (3 p.m.) in a pair of nonleague matches and returns to league play Tuesday for a 3:15 p.m. home match against Saddleback. The Breakers again step away from league play Wednesday to host Mater Dei at 3 p.m.

Track and Field
The Breakers ran April 1 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. Below are some of the top finishes turned in by Laguna athletes at the event:
Boys’ 800 meters: Tyler Nichols (2:01.03); Kevin Tovar (2:09.5); Alec Toro (2:13.26).
Boys’ 1,600 meters: Aaron Swartz (4:40.64); Jeff White (4:41.83); Ryan Jones (4:45.76); Stone Riff (4:46.12); Timmy Williams (4:54.55); Mitch Kimball (5:00.90).
Girls’ 1,600 meters: Natasha Strickland (5:09.21); Marisa Merchant (5:44.30); Brielle Budroe (5:46.22); Kayla Baskevitch (5:53.18); Anya Miller (6:05.68).
Next on the schedule for Laguna is Saturday’s Arcadia Invitational.

Boys’ Golf
The Breakers on Wednesday scored a 190-287 Golden West League victory over visiting Westminster at Aliso Creek Golf Course. Andrew Palmer and Mossimo Giau tied for medalist honors at 34 (two-over par).
Laguna goes up against Ocean View at 3 p.m. Monday in a league match at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Swimming
Several Breakers turned in strong performances at the Mission Viejo Invitational Saturday, Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said.
Among the top swims: Lila Vera was second in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke (59.78 seconds) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (58.40); Billy Wild lowered his own school record time in the boys’ 100 butterfly (54.74) and finished fifth; Nile Koegel broke 50 seconds for the first time in the 100 freestyle (49.81), good for 19th place; and Samer Alkateb turned in a season-best time (1:57.37) in the 200 freestyle.
“I have been extremely impressed with our team’s performance at meets, even though we are a very small team,” Johnson said. “I’m excited for our team to perform well at league and am hoping to place within the top 10 at CIF this year.”
Laguna next competes at home at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday against Godinez.
