Youth Scene: Laguna wins Turbo OC Cup

The Laguna Beach 14-and-Under Girls’ Water Polo team took the gold medal in the 10th annual Turbo Orange County Cup at Dana Hills High last weekend.

Laguna opened the tournament on Saturday with a 10-6 win over Corona del Mar. Laguna followed up with a competitive, 11-6 victory against United. The game was tied 4-4 at the half, but Laguna pulled away in the second half to secure a spot in Sunday’s semifinals.

Laguna played a depleted Rose Bowl team Sunday morning and rolled to a 20-6 victory to advance to the finals against Saddleback El Toro (SET). In the other Sunday semifinal, SET played the most exciting game of the tournament, defeating United, 6-5, in a shootout after the score was tied, 11-11, at the end of regulation.

Laguna got off to a slow start in the final, falling behind, 3-1, in the first quarter. Laguna picked it up in the second half and cruised to a 12-6 victory to win the gold.

The 14U team next will play at the seventh annual K7 Cup on April 13.

The Laguna 14U girls’ team is: Sydney Baba, Angelique Begay, Danielle Borelli, Evie Cant, Katya Cox-Kruger, Audrey Duffy, Alana Evans, Aria Fischer, Sophia Lucas, Isabel Riches, Evan Tingler, Thea Walsh and Kyla Whitelock.

Little League

Majors Division

VFW 7, Hobie 5: Grady Morgan led a nine-hit attack with his first home run, leading VFW to a hard-fought win over Hobie on Tuesday. Christian Holm, Nate Magers, Charlie Pillsbury, Nolan Smith, James Loughlin and Cutter Clawson all had key hits.

Jaden Rae and John Phelan of VFW provided great defense in the outfield. Pitchers Pillsbury, Loughlin and Morgan allowed a combined four hits and three earned runs.

Nick Lucas was the star for Hobie, hitting a long home run in the third inning. Josh Meiswinkel and Wes Witteman each had two hits for Hobie. Kent Cebreros struck out two in one inning of work.

Juniors Division

Laguna Beach Wells Fargo Advisors 10, Lake Forest Twins 7: Laguna Beach took off in the second inning of its game Saturday against Lake Forest and went on to defeat the Twins.

A two-run single by Joseph Sweet in the second inning scored Jordon Leppo and Lucian Georges, and Sweet later stole home for the third Wells Fargo Advisors run. In the fourth, a single by Henry Schineller scored Bayley Thomas. Dean Nunez laid down a bunt that scored both Schineller and Brandon Marquez. Another two-run single by Sweet scored Nunez and Georges, and Leppo singled home Will Bonn in the fourth inning.

The Twins fought back by scoring five runs in the fifth but Marquez singled home Bonn in the sixth for the final run for Wells Fargo Advisors.

Thomas started on the mound for Wells Fargo Advisors and struck out four and allowed one run in two innings. Schineller and Bonn threw the next four innings and Marquez closed out the seventh. Dillon Gaboury and Jack Raffo made key catches in the outfield for Wells Fargo Advisors.

AAA Division

In a game between Zero Trash and Crescent Bay Advisors completed on March 9, Crescent Bay Advisors scored a 9-3 victory at Riddle Field. In that game, Connor Fink of Zero Trash hit the first home run of the season, a two-run homer in the third inning. Later in the game, the second home run was recorded when Jeremy Hayes of Crescent Bay Advisors hit a three-run homer.

The March 15 edition of the Coastline Pilot incorrectly had Zero Trash winning the game by the 9-3 score.
