Romeo wins tennis tourney
Laguna Beach senior Benito Romeo, the 2010 Orange Coast League MVP in boys’ tennis, won his first singles tournament in the 18-and-under division of the United States Tennis Assn. League on Saturday. In the division final, Romeo defeated Conner Corley of Laguna Niguel, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

Girls’ U12 NJB team undefeated
The Laguna Beach girls’ Under-12 National Junior Basketball (NJB) team came back from the holiday break to play two league games Saturday. The team first defeated South Coast, 34-32, then beat San Clemente, 47-13.
The girls’ U12 team (5-0) is: Sophia Lucas, Isabel Mansour, Nicole Davidson, Lexi McKeown, Madison Sinclair, Rachel Kenney and Kirsten Landsliedel.

Breakers fifth in girls’ water polo poll
The Laguna Beach girls’ water polo team begins the New Year ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll. The poll continues to be led by Dos Pueblos. Following the Chargers is Los Alamitos, Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara, Foothill, Edison, Palos Verdes and Fountain Valley.
No other Laguna winter teams were included in the rankings for boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ soccer.

Welterweight champ coming to Laguna Beach
World Boxing Assn. Welterweight champion Dmitriy Salita is the featured speaker Jan. 23 at the Chabad Jewish Center in Laguna Beach (30804 S. Coast Hwy.).
