High School Roundup: Huntington Beach girls’ volleyball wins Lakewood Molten Classic
The Huntington Beach girls’ volleyball team remained unbeaten to begin the season, walking away with the title in the Lakewood Molten Classic this past weekend.
Kylie Leopard had 14 kills to pace Huntington Beach, which rallied from two sets down to defeat Lakewood 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-9 in the final on Saturday at Lakewood Artesia High.
Haylee LaFontaine, the reigning Daily Pilot Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year, added 13 kills for Huntington Beach (5-0). Taylor Ponchak registered 10 kills in the championship match.
Lightning struck twice for the Oilers, who also earned a nonleague win over the Lancers in four sets on Thursday at home.
Huntington Beach had knocked off Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos and Los Angeles Notre Dame Academy during the first weekend of the tournament.
In the semifinals, Huntington Beach swept Torrance 25-23, 25-22, 25-20, with LaFontaine leading the way with 14 kills. Ponchak provided 11 kills, while Addison Williams and Leopard each contributed eight kills.
