High School Roundup: Newport Harbor baseball advances to first regional final
The Newport Harbor High baseball team reached a CIF Southern Section semifinal game for the first time in program history this season.
Now the surging Sailors have a chance at their first CIF Southern California Regional crown.
Sam DiCarlo pitched a complete game as the Newport Harbor High baseball team upset top-seeded Chula Vista Eastlake 8-2 on the road Thursday in the CIF Southern California Regional Division III semifinals.
No. 5-seeded Newport Harbor (21-12) will play at No. 2 Westlake Village Oaks Christian (23-11) in the Division III Regional title game Saturday at noon.
DiCarlo allowed two runs on six hits Thursday for Newport Harbor. He struck out five.
Elijah Haseth was three for three to lead the Sailors’ offensive attack. Joey Wright and Lucas Perez each had two hits, with Wright adding an RBI. Bryce Blaser was one for four with two runs scored, and Jackson Gilles and Troy Christensen each added hits and RBIs.
Saturday’s game is a rematch of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals, a game won 3-2 by Oaks Christian on May 17.
