High School Roundup: CdM girls’ basketball gets by Burroughs in OT

Haley Esquino had a game-high 20 points to lead the Corona del Mar High School girls’ basketball team to a 45-43 road victory over Ridgecrest Burroughs in overtime on Saturday to begin the Division 2A playoffs.

Makena Tomlinson added 12 points, and Myla Zapanta chipped in with six points for CdM (15-11).

Alexa Rokos had a key steal late to help the Sea Kings hold on.

Sage Hill 71, Tesoro 44: The second-seeded Lightning began their Division 2AA playoff run with a dominant showing on Saturday night at home.

Sage Hill (19-9) will travel to Santa Barbara in the second round on Wednesday.

Los Angeles Brentwood 60, Newport Harbor 41: The host Sailors dropped Saturday’s Division 2A first-round game.

Newport Harbor (19-9) was the outright Wave League champion this season.

Northwood 56, Fountain Valley 35: Audrey Tengan had 12 points to pace the Barons on Saturday in a Division 3AA playoff opener at home.

Margaret Tengan scored nine points for Fountain Valley (18-7), the champion of the Surf League this season. Mary Nguyen, Sarah Henry and Hannah Walsh each scored four points.

Rowland Heights Rowland 43, Edison 35: Gwen Ontiveros made four three-pointers as part of a 16-point performance, but it wasn’t enough for the Chargers in Saturday’s Division 3A playoff opener on the road.

Mia Cassel added nine points and 13 rebounds for Edison (9-19).

Division 5AA

Laguna Beach 51, Loara 38

Estancia 57, Yermo Silver Valley 18: Jaydin McClure had 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Eagles on Saturday in the first round of the Division 5A playoffs.

Alexis Orellana had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds for Estancia (13-12). Mackenzie Sanchez added eight points and 12 assists.

Savanna 40, Los Amigos 9: The visiting Lobos were blown out by the Rebels on Saturday in the first round of the Division 5A playoffs.

Los Amigos (7-19) finished third in the Garden Grove League this season, clinching its playoff spot in the final game of the regular season with a win at Rancho Alamitos.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Los Angeles Loyola 56, Fountain Valley 48: The Barons fell to the Cubs in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs on Saturday at home.

Fountain Valley (12-9) shared the Wave League title with Marina this season.

Marina 49, Trabuco Hills 41: The Vikings clamped down defensively to earn a win Friday night at home in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs.

Marina (20-9) will host No. 4-seeded Foothill in the second round Tuesday.

La Puente Bishop Amat 50, Ocean View 42: Cole Kenrich scored 19 points for the Seahawks in the first round of the Division 3A playoffs on the road Friday night.

Chico Lopez added 12 points for Ocean View, which finished its season 18-9.

Santa Fe 60, Costa Mesa 45: The Mustangs finished their season 11-17 after losing on the road in the first round of the Division 4AA playoffs on Friday night.

Santa Monica St. Monica Catholic 62, Sage Hill 49: The Lightning lost on the road Friday in the first round of the Division 4A playoffs.

Sage Hill finished its season 15-11.

Estancia 72, Helendale Academy of Careers and Exploration 31: James De La O scored a team-high 16 points for the Eagles in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs Friday night on the road.

Reef Johnson added 15 points for Estancia (18-11), which will host Moreno Valley Leadership Military Academy in the second round Tuesday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona Santiago 1, Huntington Beach 0: The visiting Oilers suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the top-seeded Sharks on Saturday in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Huntington Beach (14-7-3) had earned an at-large berth out of the Surf League.

Newport Harbor 1, West Hills Chaminade 0: Sadie Hoch scored a goal assisted by Brielle Benedict to send the Sailors past the Eagles in Saturday’s Division 1 first-round match.

Emily Park made three saves for Newport Harbor (13-9-4), which will remain home to face Sea View League champion Capistrano Valley (19-1-3) in the second round on Wednesday.

The Cougars beat JSerra 2-1 in their playoff opener at home.

Claremont 2, Edison 1 (OT): Alex Wood scored the goal for the visiting Chargers on Saturday in a first-round match of the Division 1 playoffs.

Edison (13-8-2) was the second-place team out of the Surf League.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 3, Marina 0: The Vikings were blanked on the road on Saturday in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Marina (7-10-2) was the second-place team out of the Wave League.

Corona del Mar 2, Crescenta Valley 1: Brea Sofferman scored off a corner kick from Ava Frederickson in the 68th minute, providing the decisive goal in the Sea Kings’ Division 2 first-round match on the road.

Jane Paulsen scored a goal from 35 yards out in the 65th minute to tie the score. Sydney Walls had four saves in the first half, and Alex Boserup made one save in the second half for CdM (13-7-2).

Whittier La Serna 2, Ocean View 1: Samantha Padilla had a goal and an assist for the Del Rio League-champion Lancers on Saturday in a first-round match of the Division 3 playoffs.

Jaelyn Lane also scored a goal for La Serna.

Ocean View (9-7-2) was the third-place team in the Golden West League this season.

Costa Mesa 1, Whittier California 0: The host Mustangs shut out the Condors on Saturday in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Costa Mesa (11-10-3) advances to face Lancaster Paraclete on the road on Wednesday.

Sage Hill 4, Anaheim 2: The Lightning used a four-goal second half to beat the Colonists in Saturday’s Division 6 first-round match on the road.

Sage Hill improved to 9-5-4 overall.

Corona del Mar 9, Westlake Village Oaks Christian 6: Claire Eusey, Makena Macedo, Jillian Schlom and Aubrie Anderson all scored two goals for the Sea Kings in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff quarterfinal match on the road.

Mia Bernhoit added a goal for CdM (16-13), which upset No. 3-seeded Oaks Christian.

The Sea Kings will play No. 2-seeded Studio City Harvard Westlake in the semifinals on Wednesday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center. Harvard-Westlake beat Santa Barbara 10-3 in another quarterfinal.

Edison 13, Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos 6: Senior Lilyanna Larson scored seven goals to pace the Chargers in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal match Saturday at Edison High.

Lily Worley scored twice for No. 2-seeded Edison (15-10), while Riley Boehm, Bella Schulze, Gaby Kelly and goalkeeper Madie Ambrose also all scored.

Edison will play No. 3-seeded San Juan Hills in the semifinals on Wednesday. San Juan Hills edged Downey 9-8 in another quarterfinal match.
