High School Roundup: Pacifica Christian girls’ basketball wins up-tempo game at Newport Christian
The Pacifica Christian Orange County High School girls’ basketball team scored early and often in defeating Newport Christian 90-35 on Thursday in an Academy League game.
Charis Wondercheck had a team-high 22 points to go with six rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Tritons in a game that turned into a track meet with both teams getting up and down the floor.
“That is our focus, to really push in transition,” Pacifica Christian coach Chyanne Butler said. “We want to play fast-paced, and we want to make sure we’re playing defense. Our best game is in transition, and we want to play fast, so that’s what we look forward to.”
Annika Jiwani had 18 points, including four three-pointers for Pacifica Christian (17-5, 5-0 in the Academy League). Addison Deal filled the stat sheet with 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Ava Carter had 14 points, Jamie MacKay scored nine points, Lauryn Ham contributed six points and five assists, and Nola Mihaly-Garvin added four points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Abbi Bowman had a game-high 23 points for Newport Christian (6-4, 2-2). Lani Bowman added two points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Abby Lin also scored five points.
Newport Christian coach Terrell Thorogood said the Seahawks, in their third season as a program, have yet to gain eligibility to compete in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
“We’re looking to get back on track, … a win within these next [three] games puts us at a winning record this season, which is an improvement from a year ago,” Thorogood said. “I think these girls can finish strong, and our goal is to end on a high note, end on a winning record.”
Corona del Mar 49, Huntington Beach 41: Makena Tomlinson had a game-high 24 points to lead the Sea Kings on Thursday in a Surf League game at home.
Haley Esquino added nine points, Myla Zapanta scored eight points, and Dorothy Schwenck chipped in with six points for CdM (13-9, 3-0).
Lily Alonso had 14 points to lead Huntington Beach (10-12, 0-4), followed by Audrey Nguyen with 11 points.
Calvary Chapel 60, Costa Mesa 34: The Mustangs dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-7 in the Orange Coast League following Thursday’s game on the road.
Calvary Chapel (15-2, 8-0) has clinched at least a share of the Orange Coast League title.
Newport Harbor 51, Edison 30: Chase Dionio paced the Sailors with 16 points on Thursday in a Wave League game.
Cydney Jover contributed nine points and six assists for Newport Harbor (17-8, 4-0), which has clinched at least a share of the league title. Emma Coatsworth added six points and four assists, and Kate Bland had five points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
Edison (9-17, 2-2) has a critical game coming up on Monday at Laguna Beach (16-9, 2-2), in which second place in the Wave League will be up for grabs.
Saddleback 45, Estancia 16: The Eagles fell to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Orange Coast League with Thursday’s loss on the road.
Fountain Valley 69, Los Alamitos 66 (2OT): Audrey Tengan’s 22 points paced the Barons, who earned a key Surf League victory in double overtime on Thursday at Los Alamitos High.
Margaret Tengan and Hannah Walsh each scored 17 points, and Sarah Henry also had 11 points for Fountain Valley (15-5, 2-0), which plays host to Los Alamitos (13-6, 1-2) in the back half of a home-and-home set on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Laguna Beach 47, Marina 21: Kate Cheng scored 17 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocks for the host Breakers on Thursday in a Wave League game.
Sophie Marriner added 15 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Laguna Beach (16-9, 2-2).
Marina (5-18, 0-4) has dropped 11 in a row.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Corona del Mar 1, Huntington Beach 0: Brea Sofferman earned and converted a penalty kick for the Sea Kings in the 60th minute of Thursday’s Surf League match at CdM.
Goalkeeper Alex Boserup had 10 saves for CdM (13-5-2, 1-3 in league), which snapped a five-match losing streak.
CdM hosts Edison on Monday, while Huntington Beach (12-6-3, 1-3) hosts Los Alamitos.
Los Alamitos 3, Edison 0: The host Griffins clinched at least a share of the Surf League title on Thursday night.
Los Alamitos, ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, improved to 14-3-5 overall and 4-0 in league.
Second-place Edison fell to 12-8-1 overall, 2-2 in league.
Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 2 (OT): Laine Briggs scored the match-winning goal six minutes into overtime on Anto Russo’s assist for the Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League match at Fountain Valley High.
Sadie Hoch and Isa Whittaker also scored for the Sailors (11-8-4, 4-0 in league), which led 2-0 at halftime. Briggs and Russo had one assist each.
Taylor Heit and Samantha Armenta each scored second-half goals for Fountain Valley (6-10-3, 1-3).
Newport Harbor can clinch the outright Wave League title with a home win against Marina on Monday.
Marina 1, Laguna Beach 0: The Vikings got back in the win column with a shutout of the Breakers on the road on Thursday in a Wave League match.
Marina improved to 6-8-2 overall and 2-2 in league, while Laguna Beach is 4-8-2 overall and 1-3 in league.
Segerstrom 5, Ocean View 2: The Seahawks kept pace in the Golden West League after Thursday’s road victory.
Ocean View improved to 9-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in league. The Seahawks are in a first-place tie with Westminster (11-2-4, 5-1-1), whom they host Tuesday, with three matches remaining.
Claremont Webb 5, Pacifica Christian Orange County 1: The Tritons dropped to 13-6 overall and 1-3 in the San Joaquin League with Thursday’s defeat on the road.
St. Margaret’s 3, Sage Hill 1: The Lightning fell at home to their San Joaquin League rivals on Thursday.
Sage Hill is now 7-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league.
BOYS’ SOCCER
St. Margaret’s 5, Sage Hill 1: The Lightning are 1-8-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the San Joaquin League after falling in Thursday’s match on the road.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Fountain Valley 12, Marina 10: Jessica Jang scored four goals to lead the Barons in Thursday’s Wave League match.
Kalia Wesley and Lexi Cooper each scored twice for Fountain Valley (13-11, 1-4), which picked up its first league win.
Taylor Lambert led Marina (8-16, 1-4) with five goals, and Lana Kardos scored twice.
Foothill 7, Laguna Beach 6: The Breakers were upset in their Newport Invitational opener Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
Ava Knepper scored twice for Laguna Beach (19-4), while Cleo Washer, Ava Houlahan, Lela McCarroll and Myha Pinto each scored one goal. Lauren Schneider made 10 saves.
Newport Harbor 16, Carlsbad 1: Bia Mantellato, Ryan Chalupnik and Makaelee Hansberger each scored three goals for the Sailors in their first match of the Newport Invitational on Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
Avery Montiel, Alex Love, Morgan Netherton, Chiara Amoroso, Lily Gess, Angie Peterson and Caitlin Stayt also scored for Newport Harbor (17-1), the top-seeded team in the eight-team tournament.
