High School Roundup: Sage Hill tops Newport Harbor in battle of defending champions

Zoie Lamkin had a team-high 21 points to go with two steals and two blocked shots, as the Sage Hill School girls’ basketball team defeated Newport Harbor 66-56 on Tuesday in the CdM Tip-off Tournament.

Emily Eadie added 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Sage Hill (5-1), which won the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA championship over Ontario Christian last season.

Kat Righeimer had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals, and Isabel Gomez chipped in with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Lightning.

Chase Dionio scored a game-high 30 points for Newport Harbor (4-1), the reigning Division 4A champion.

Cydney Jover contributed seven points and six assists. Ellie Robinson also scored seven points to go with four rebounds, and Emma Fults added five points, 11 rebounds and two blocks for the Sailors.

Fountain Valley 51, Westminster 37: Audrey Tengan led the visiting Barons with 14 points in a nonleague game on Tuesday.

Margaret Tengan had 11 points, Audrey Chow added nine points, and Hannah Walsh also scored eight points for Fountain Valley (3-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

CIF Southern Section Individuals

Eight local players advanced to at least the round of 32 after sectional play Monday.

Marina junior Mika Ikemori advanced in singles at the Marina High sectional. After a first-round bye, she defeated Karina Wilson of Trabuco Hills 6-0, 6-0 in the second round and Arden Stobart of Sage Hill 6-1, 6-0 in the third round.

Edison’s team of Kailee You and Kaylee Hsieh also advanced at the Marina sectional. You and Hseih topped a team from Magnolia in the second round and beat Kiana Giunja and Bree Clark of Pacifica Christian Orange County 6-1, 6-1 in the third round.

In the sectional held at Lakewood Tennis Center, Yen Nhi Huynh of Huntington Beach advanced in singles. Huynh got a first-round bye, topped Harshini Mahesh of Tustin 6-3, 6-0 in the second round and beat Dana Kunza of Alhambra Mark Keppel 6-0, 6-2 in the third round.

CdM’s Jane Paulsen and Cate Montgomery, as well as Cindy Huynh and Sophie Jin-Ngo of Huntington Beach, also advanced in doubles. Paulsen and Montgomery eased past teams from Cerritos Gahr and Long Beach Millikan, while Huynh and Jin-Ngo earned straight sets wins over teams from Downey and Villa Park.

Each of the local players advances to either the round of 32 or round of 16, depending on ranking. The tournament resumes Dec. 1 at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Marina 72, Aliso Niguel 63: Kylle Magdangal had 16 points for the Vikings in the Feast Week tournament game Tuesday at Marina High.

Robert Aguirre had 14 points, and Eric Hodgkins scored 13 for Marina (5-2).

Ocean View 61, La Puente Bassett 43: Chico Lopez scored 24 points to lead the Seahawks in Tuesday’s Rancho Alamitos tournament game.

Ocean View improved to 3-2 overall.

La Puente 46, Estancia 39: Lewis Tate scored 13 points for the Eagles in Tuesday’s San Gabriel tournament game.

Reef Johnson scored 10 and Jaedon Hose-Shea chipped in nine points for Estancia (2-1).
