High School Roundup: Estancia girls’ volleyball goes distance in win at Anaheim

Ruby Uchytil had 20 kills and 26 digs to lead the visiting Estancia High School girls’ volleyball team to a 25-17, 25-18, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11 win over Anaheim on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

Joanna Santosuosso added 14 kills and 16 digs for Estancia (22-10), who will play host to Indio (15-3) on Saturday.

Costa Mesa 3, Azusa 0: Lorelei Hobbis paced the third-seeded Mustangs with 18 kills in a 25-19, 25-22, 25-9 win to open the Division 7 playoffs at home.

Rosey Madriaga contributed 36 assists and eight digs for Costa Mesa, and Lucero Islas added eight kills to go with two service aces.

Costa Mesa (18-6) will travel to take on Valencia Trinity Classical Academy (17-7) in the second round on Saturday.

Edison 3, Los Angeles Windward 0: The host Chargers came away with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 victory in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs.

Summer Witherby had a team-high 16 kills for the Chargers. Izzy Lunde added six aces, and Hannah Weber had 13 digs.

Edison (18-16) will remain at home in the second round to face Upland (22-4) on Saturday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 9, Huntington Beach 9 (Corona del Mar wins 83-79 on games): The Sea Kings clinched the outright Surf League title with Thursday’s big win at CdM.

Sienna Brooks, Jane Paulsen and Shea Tomac each won twice in singles for CdM (12-2, 5-0 in league), which beat last year’s champion Huntington Beach on games for the second time in league.

Cate Montgomery and Lauren Jones won twice in doubles for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Yen Nhi Huynh swept in singles for Huntington Beach (12-2, 3-2). Cindy Huynh and Sophie Jin-Ngo swept in doubles.

CdM closes out league with a home match against rival Newport Harbor on Monday, while Huntington Beach hosts Los Alamitos.

Newport Harbor 10, Los Alamitos 8: Sophie Harlan swept in singles for the Sailors in Thursday’s Surf League match at Newport Harbor High.

Renee Hayes and Paige DeCinces won a key tiebreaker set in doubles for Newport Harbor (7-9, 2-3 in league), while senior Brigitte Webber made her first varsity start on Senior Day.

Laguna Beach 10, Edison 8: Katelyn Smith, Sarah MacCallum and Jessica MacCallum all swept in singles for the Breakers in Thursday’s Wave League match.

With the win, Laguna Beach (8-4, 5-0 in league) clinched the outright league title. The Breakers close out the regular season with a match at Fountain Valley on Monday.

Edison, which concludes league play at Marina on Monday, fell to 4-12 overall, 3-2 in league.

Fountain Valley 14, Marina 4: The Barons picked up their first Wave League win Thursday at Fountain Valley High.

The doubles teams of Emily Tran and Iris Chau, Caitlyn Nguyen and Rene Do, as well as Melody Hom and Katie Dang, all swept for Fountain Valley (5-11, 1-4 in league).

Marina dropped to 8-13 overall, and 1-4 in league.

Sage Hill 11, Troy 7: Sophomore Arden Stobart swept in singles for the Lightning in a nonleague clash of CIF Southern Section Division 2 powers Wednesday at Sage Hill.

The Lightning (14-3), ranked No. 4 in Division 2, won six of nine doubles sets against No. 6-ranked Troy.

San Joaquin League champion Sage Hill hosts El Dorado on Friday and league opponent Pacifica Christian Orange County on Monday.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Orange Coast League finals: Costa Mesa sophomore Sydney Ngo became a two-time league champion in posting the low score of 99 across the two-day, 27-hole Orange Coast League finals on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Ngo shot 10-under-par 60 on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday. Westminster’s Rachel Truong (116) and Leanne Hong (116) and Orange’s Yvette Kamau (117) rounded out the top four, all of whom will go on to represent the league in the CIF Southern Section individual preliminaries.

The top six earned first-team all-league honors. Westminster’s Vanessa Pham (127) and Estancia’s Danielle Breitwieser (128) also made the first team.
