High School Roundup: Ocean View football earns overtime win in coach Jimmy Welker’s debut

You can’t lose if you don’t give up any points.

The Ocean View High School football team pitched a shutout on Friday night, and that allowed the Seahawks to earn an 8-0 overtime win over Santa Ana Valley in a nonleague opener at home.

Ocean View edged out the victory in Coach Jimmy Welker’s debut. Welker was hired after Luis Nunez resigned after nine seasons as the head of the program.

Ocean View scored the game’s only points in overtime, when Frankie Armenta threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Seth Churchwell. Armenta then completed the two-point conversion pass to Jose Cholula.

The Seahawks take on Los Amigos at Garden Grove High School next Friday.

Fountain Valley 14, Placentia Valencia 6: The Barons also earned a win in their first-year head coach’s debut Friday night, as David Gutierrez guided Fountain Valley to the win at Westminster High.

Owen Tomko had an 80-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Nowicki to start the Fountain Valley scoring. The Barons then built a 14-0 lead in the third quarter on Ben Pham’s two-yard rushing score.

Fountain Valley hosts El Dorado on Friday at Ocean View High School.

Arcadia 43, Marina 25: The Vikings blocked a punt for a touchdown in the second half, but a 30-12 halftime deficit proved too deep of a hole to dig out of for Marina in its season opener on the road on Friday.

Marina travels to take on Newport Harbor (0-1) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Yorba Linda 26, Newport Harbor 14: Payton Irving scored twice on the ground for the visiting Sailors in Friday’s nonleague season opener.

Kashton Henjum added seven catches for 100 yards for Newport Harbor.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Wildomar Cornerstone Christian 0: Freshman libero Charlotte Carlson had seven service aces to lead the visiting Tritons to a 25-5, 25-16, 25-5 sweep on Friday in a nonleague match.

Freshman outside hitter Kaelin Rieke notched seven kills, junior middle blocker Payton Rieke provided five kills and sophomore Colleen O’Callaghan contributed five aces.

Pacifica Christian (1-2) plays host to Corona Crossroads Christian on Monday at 5 p.m.

Palos Verdes 2, Laguna Beach 0: The Breakers reached the championship match of the Tesoro Tournament on Saturday, but Laguna Beach fell to Palos Verdes 29-27, 25-15.

Laguna Beach (5-3) was the defending champion of the tournament, which was last contested in 2019.

The Breakers play host to Dana Hills in a South Orange County nonleague match on Tuesday.

Edison advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, before bowing out against Laguna Beach 23-25, 25-18, 15-8.
