The CIF Southern Section is set to crown its first group of champions for lacrosse.

The section released its playoff pairings for boys’ and girls’ lacrosse on Saturday, revealing the path teams hoping to become part of that historic group will have to take.

There are three divisional brackets for each gender. Four boys’ and three girls’ lacrosse teams from the area qualified for the postseason.

Crosstown rivals Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor were placed on opposite sides of the draw for boys’ lacrosse in Division 1.

After winning the Sunset League title, CdM (11-3) received a first-round bye. The Sea Kings will face the winner of Agoura (12-3, Marmonte League No. 2) and West Ranch (5-1, Foothill League co-champion) in the second round on Friday.

Newport Harbor (6-10, Sunset League No. 3) will travel to Corona Santiago (14-5, Big VIII League co-champion) on Tuesday. The winner of that match will be on the road to face No. 3-seeded Foothill.

The Sunset League received a great deal of respect. In addition to second-place Los Alamitos also appearing in the Division 1 bracket, the league got two at-large bids.

Edison and Huntington Beach will have to fight their way through the wild-card round on Tuesday to make the main draw of Division 2.

Edison (11-6) will travel to take on Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula (7-7), with the winner to slot into the first round against Santa Clarita Saugus (5-1).

Huntington Beach (13-7) will be on the road against Redondo Union (5-4). The winner advances to compete against Northwood (11-2).

In girls’ lacrosse, Newport Harbor and Edison will compete in the Division 1 playoffs. First-round match play for the division is scheduled for Saturday.

The Sunset League champion Sailors have a tough draw, opening at home against Mission League co-champion West Hills Chaminade (8-4). If Newport Harbor (14-5) wins, it could have to face off with top-seeded Foothill (13-0) in the second round.

Edison (10-6), the second-place team in the Sunset League, will open the playoffs at South Coast League champion San Clemente (12-1).

The Corona del Mar girls’ team is listed as the No. 2 seed on the bracket, but it will play a Division 2 wild-card round match at home versus Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (9-6) on Wednesday.

If the Sea Kings (13-5) get through the wild-card match, they would oppose Los Angeles Marlborough (8-3).

All games before the final round are scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. unless both competing schools agree to a different time. For brackets and start times, visit cifss.org.
