High School Roundup: Huntington Beach softball clinches Surf League title with walk-off win

Devyn Greer singled in Jaylene Duarte for the winning run, as the Huntington Beach High School softball team earned a walk-off victory in eight innings against Edison 2-1 on Wednesday in a Surf League game at home.

Huntington Beach (19-3, 6-1 in the Surf League) clinched the Surf League championship, which Oilers coach Jeff Forsberg said is the fifth league title in program history. It is the first league crown for the Oilers since 2018.

Mikayla Carman had two hits and drove in a run for Huntington Beach. Greer threw eight innings, allowing one run on two hits while recording 11 strikeouts in the win.

Edison pitcher Jenna Gorden limited the Oilers to two runs on six hits. She struck out four and walked four.

Emma Mendoza had a run batted in for Edison (9-9, 3-4). Isabella Espinoza scored the run.

SOFTBALL

Fountain Valley 7, Newport Harbor 5: Samara Ortega went two for three with a home run to lead the visiting Barons on Wednesday in a Wave League game.

Veronica Moore and Makenzie Butt each had two hits and a run batted in for Fountain Valley (9-11, 5-2). Samantha Estrada allowed two earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.

McKayla Cotton had three hits, including a double, and two runs batted in for Newport Harbor (12-8, 6-1). Lily Larkins had a pair of doubles, and Ava Nolan, Lindsey Blanchfield and Dru Stinson each had two hits.

BASEBALL

Ocean View 10, Godinez 0: Brandon Wood and Max Takacs combined on the shutout for the Seahawks in Wednesday’s Golden West League game on the road.

Ocean View (17-6-1, 7-0 in league) clinched at least a share of the league title.

Thomas Williams and Jackson Rockefeller each had three hits for the Seahawks, who can clinch the outright title in a home game against Godinez (2-5 in league) on Friday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 28, Corona del Mar 27: Audrey Nguyen had a team-high 10 points to lead the host Oilers on Wednesday in a Surf League game.

Huntington Beach (14-2, 5-1) earned a share of the Surf League championship with CdM (15-5, 5-1). It marks the third consecutive league title for the Oilers.

Andie Payne and Alyssa Real each scored six points for Huntington Beach. Isobel Melitas, Jessica Doke and Minami Cheever each had two points.

The Sea Kings were led by Trasara Alexander and Sarah Audiss with eight points apiece. Makena Tomlinson had six points and Megan Martodam had four points.

In finishing tied for first place, CdM also claims its first league title since the 2014-15 season.

Newport Harbor 60, Marina 36: Chase Dionio had 22 points and three rebounds as the Sailors completed an undefeated run through the Wave League with Wednesday’s win.

Emma Fults had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists, Daelyn Renee provided seven points and four steals, and Cydney Jover chipped in with seven points, three assists and three steals for Newport Harbor (14-2, 6-0).

Willa Rath also had four points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals, and Kate Bland scored six points for the Sailors.

Marina finished the season at 3-18 overall and 1-5 in league.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 54, Avalon 48: Hailey MacKay and Annika Jiwani each scored 17 points, as the host Tritons clinched the Academy League title on Wednesday.

Nola Mihaly-Garvin contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals for Pacifica Christian (13-3, 7-0).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Dana Hills 63, Corona del Mar 48: Sanjay Tewari scored a team-high 16 points for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s nonleague game at CdM.

Scott Truninger added 10 points for CdM (5-13), which wraps up Wave League play at Marina on Thursday night.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Newhall Hart 2, Huntington Beach 1 (OT): Nico Ruiz scored for the visiting Oilers on Wednesday in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal match.

Huntington Beach (13-3-2) went to overtime for the second straight match. The Oilers were the second-place team in the Wave League this season.

Hart (10-2-1) advances to take on No. 2-seeded Corona Santiago on the road Saturday in the semifinals.

BOYS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa vs. Ocean View: Cristopher Rodriguez had the low round of the day for Costa Mesa, which was credited with a win by forfeit in the Orange Coast League match on Wednesday.

Rodriguez shot a one-over-par 36 at Costa Mesa Country Club.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with an overall and league record of 8-4.

Ocean View is 4-10 overall and 4-8 in league.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa vs. Ocean View: Sydney Ngo carded a two-over-par 37 to lead all competitors on Wednesday at Costa Mesa Country Club, but the Mustangs dropped the Orange Coast League contest by forfeit.

Costa Mesa (7-5 overall and in league) did not have the requisite five players post nine-hole score totals due to a mid-match injury.

Ocean View is now 4-9 overall and 4-8 in league.
