High School Roundup: Huntington Beach, CdM baseball teams clinch league titles

Matthew Lopez got the win as the Huntington Beach High School baseball team beat Los Alamitos 8-1 on Tuesday at Los Alamitos High, clinching the outright Surf League title.

Lopez pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out five. He also was two for three at the plate with a run batted in.

Ralph Velasquez was three for five with an RBI and a double for Huntington Beach (18-5, 7-0 in league). Mark Muranaka, Caden Aoki, Nick Dumesnil, and Blake Penso all had two hits for the winners.

Second-place Los Alamitos fell to 14-5, 4-3 in league.

The Oilers close out league with two more games against the Griffins, at home Thursday and on the road Saturday.

Corona del Mar 20, Newport Harbor 8: The Sea Kings clinched the outright Wave League title with an emphatic Battle of the Bay victory Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

Charlie Mannon was two for three with two home runs and six runs batted in for CdM (17-5, 6-1 in league). Nico DiFerdinando, Blake Butcher and Ryan Zimmerman also hit home runs, while Matthew DeCrona had two doubles among his three hits.

CdM took control with a 10-run second inning.

Pitcher Keller Strauss got the win, allowing one earned run in four innings.

Bryce Blazer, Kaden Stowell and Jackson Gilles all had a hit and two RBIs for Newport Harbor (11-10, 3-4 in league).

The rivals play again Thursday at CdM, and Saturday at Newport Harbor.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

No. 2 Huntington Beach 3, Downey 0: Cayman LaFontaine had six kills and six service aces to lead the Oilers to a 25-7, 25-7, 25-9 victory over host Downey in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff opener.

The No. 2-seeded Oilers (11-4) will be at home Thursday against Thousand Oaks, which beat Mission Viejo 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13 in its first-round match on the road.

No. 1 Marina 3, San Gabriel 0: Daniel Purtell and Aidan Patterson each had 14 kills to lead the top-seeded Vikings on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs at home.

Dyllan Nguyen contributed 41 assists, four kills and two aces for Marina (6-5), which travels to take on Redlands in the second round on Thursday.

Michael Torrez added four kills and Joseph Nunez compiled 23 digs.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Anaheim 1: The Tritons notched a 25-16, 25-23, 14-25, 25-13 win over the Colonists on the road on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Pacifica Christian (11-7) will be back in the city of Anaheim for its second-round match on Thursday, when the Tritons travel to take on Katella. The Knights beat Vista Murrieta 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23 in the first round.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Indio Shadow Hills 1, Costa Mesa 0: The Mustangs gave up a second-half goal and were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Tuesday on the road.

Costa Mesa, the Orange Coast League champion, finished the season 9-5-5.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Fountain Valley 62, Corona del Mar 39: The Barons clinched the outright Wave League championship on Tuesday night at Fountain Valley High.

Jeremiah Davis had 16 points to lead Fountain Valley (11-2, 5-0 in league). Jacob Oros scored nine points, while Preston Amarillo tallied eight points, six rebounds and five assists. Jadyn Bryson also scored eight points.

Scott Truninger led CdM (5-11, 0-5) with six points.

Fountain Valley closes out league play at Huntington Beach on Thursday, while CdM plays at Marina.

Laguna Beach 51, Newport Harbor 45: Nolan Naess scored 29 points for the Breakers in Tuesday’s Surf League game at Newport Harbor High.

Kai Gillies added eight points for Laguna Beach (13-3, 4-1 in league). The Breakers remained tied for first place in league with Los Alamitos, which beat Edison 62-56 in another game Tuesday.

Newport Harbor fell to 3-7, 0-5 in league.

Laguna Beach closes out league play at home against Edison on Thursday, while Newport Harbor travels to Los Alamitos.

Marina 66, Huntington Beach 51: The Vikings took over outright possession of second place in the Wave League after Tuesday night’s win.

Marina improved to 10-6 overall, 3-2 in league. Huntington Beach is 6-11 overall, 2-3 in league.

Ocean View 63, Garden Grove 51: The Seahawks have clinched the outright Golden West League title with their win Tuesday at Garden Grove High.

Seniors Slater Miller and Luke Washington each scored 15 points for Ocean View (9-6, 9-0 in league), which closes out league at Segerstrom on Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Santa Ana 31, Estancia 26: The visiting Eagles dropped to 5-10 overall and 4-5 in Orange Coast League play following Tuesday night’s contest.

Estancia will play host to Calvary Chapel in its season finale on Thursday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa 265, Katella 297: Costa Mesa’s Cristopher Rodriguez was the medalist with an eight-over-par 43 in an Orange Coast League match on Tuesday at Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

The Mustangs (7-4 overall and in league) will wrap up the regular season against Ocean View at Costa Mesa Country Club on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 15, Edison 9: Joelle Rothbard scored seven goals for the Sailors, who clinched their second straight Sunset League title Tuesday at Edison High in the league finale.

Olivia Gritzmacher added six goals for Newport Harbor (13-5, 5-1 in league), and goalkeeper Lucy Valdes made 10 saves.
