High School Roundup: CdM wrestling beats rival Newport Harbor for Wave League crown
The Corona del Mar High School wrestling team defeated host Newport Harbor 47-24 in the Battle of the Bay match on Thursday to win the Wave League championship.
In winning the dual meet, the Sea Kings retained the Golden Singlet, which is awarded annually to the winner of the Battle of the Bay.
Brendan Muse (120 pounds), Luke Villaluz (152), Antonio Aramburu (160), Anthony Gonzalez (195) and Dylan Wood (220) all won their matches by fall for CdM. Zion Bowling-Hernandez (145) earned five team points with a technical-fall victory, and James Baldwin (106) and J.J. Strapp won their matches by decision.
Sea Kings standout Emilio Franco, a former state meet qualifier, received a win by forfeit in the heavyweight division.
Newport Harbor (2-5, 2-1 in the Wave League) earned its points with pins by Giovanni Sabatasso (132), Jack Larner (170) and Aidan Gassel (182), along with victories by decision for Micah Van Grol (113) and Matthew Pinon (138).
CdM (6-1, 3-0), the defending CIF Southern Section Division 6 dual meet wrestling champions, will receive an automatic bid into the section’s dual meet championships. The Sea Kings are currently ranked second in the Division 6 poll.
“I’m so proud of our team,” Sea Kings coach Mark Alex said. “They take pride in being the keepers of the Golden Singlet and wrestled fantastic to retain it. They were also pumped about winning the league championship, which had them very focused this season. We have a great group of young men who worked together to achieve their team goals. I really enjoy being their coach.”
BOYS’ SOCCER
Edison 2, Mater Dei 1: Ozwaldo Moran scored twice in the final 10 minutes to lift the Chargers over the Monarchs on Thursday in a first-round match at home in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Trenton Bellinger added an assist, and Bennett Flory made two saves for Edison.
Edison (12-4-1) will travel to take on South Coast League Capistrano Valley in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Long Beach Millikan 2, Newport Harbor 0: The host Sailors were shut out by the Rams on Thursday in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.
Newport Harbor (10-5-2) was the Wave League champion this season.
Millikan moves on to oppose top-seeded Los Angeles Cathedral on the road on Saturday.
Aliso Niguel 2, Laguna Beach 0: Aliso Niguel coach Randy Dodge said Luis Sanchez scored both goals for the host Wolverines on Thursday in a first-round match of the Division 2 playoffs.
Corey Peterson also had an assist for Aliso Niguel, which stays at home to take on Riverside Arlington in the second round.
Laguna Beach, an at-large selection out of the Wave League, finishes the season with a record of 7-8-2.
Westlake Village Oaks Christian 3, Los Amigos 1: Derek Garcia scored the goal for the Lobos in a first-round game of the Division 3 playoffs on Thursday.
Saul Martinez made two saves for Los Amigos (8-2-1), which was the second-place team in the Garden Grove League.
Oaks Christian advances to play host to Villa Park in the second round.
Palmdale Aerospace Academy 2, Sage Hill 1: Max Welford scored on a free kick from the top of the box for the visiting Lightning on Thursday in the first round of the Division 6 playoffs.
Sage Hill (7-2-3) was the second-place team out of the San Joaquin League this season.
Palmdale Aerospace Academy travels to face Temecula Linfield Christian in the second round.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 91, University 68: Asher Hamilton scored a game-high 14 points for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s nonleague game at CdM.
Sanjay Tewari, Jack Johnston and Scott Truninger each scored 11 points for CdM (5-9).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Newport Harbor 75, Laguna Beach 40: Chase Dionio scored 27 points with three assists and three steals to lead the Sailors on Thursday in a Wave League game.
Cydney Jover scored 14 points to go with six assists for Newport Harbor (12-2, 4-0). Daelyn Renee had eight points, and Willa Rath and Ellie Robinson each scored six points.
Laguna Beach fell to 6-17 overall and 0-4 in league.
Edison 38, Marina 24: The host Chargers earned the win in a Wave League game on Thursday night.
Edison (8-6, 3-1) can move into a tie for first place in the league with a win at Newport Harbor on Monday.
Marina dropped to 3-15 overall and 1-3 in league.
Saddleback 54, Estancia 28: The host Eagles were led by Alexis Orellana with 12 points on Thursday in an Orange Coast League game.
Alejandra Meza also scored 10 points for Estancia (5-9, 4-4), which is in third place in the league.
Karime Lopez had 18 points and Kendrah Lopez provided 15 points for Saddleback (8-1, 8-0).
SOFTBALL
Los Alamitos 5, Newport Harbor 2: Eliana Gottlieb had two hits, including a double, and a run batted in for the Sailors on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover game on the road.
Marisa Salazar had a pair of triples and drove in two runs for Los Alamitos.
Newport Harbor dropped to 12-6 overall.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Surf League finals
Fountain Valley swept the finals Thursday at Corona del Mar High, with Alan Ton winning in singles and the doubles team of Ben Nguyen and Kai Rodriguez also coming out on top.
Ton, seeded second, beat top-seeded Niels Hoffmann of CdM 6-0, 6-0 in the title match.
Nguyen and Rodriguez, also seeded second, got past Fountain Valley teammates Ninh Nguyen and Nathan Dang 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles title match.
Wave League finals
Peter Liang of Marina won the singles title Thursday at Marina High.
Liang, the top seed, beat No. 2-seeded Ian MacLaughlin of Laguna Beach 6-0, 6-2 in the title match.
In doubles, top-seeded Casey Boehm and Matt Berk of Laguna Beach beat No. 3-seeded teammates Jeff Herkins and Chris Herkins 6-0, 6-2 in the title match.
San Joaquin League finals
Sage Hill sophomore Grant Gallagher beat senior teammate Alan Hung, 6-2, 6-3, in the singles title match Thursday at Sage Hill.
The Lightning also swept the top two spots in doubles. Sophomores Shaan Sakraney and Adi Rawal beat teammates senior Jonny Alterman and freshman Scott Hu, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5, in the title match.
Golden West League finals
The Ocean View High doubles team of Michael Dechene and Josh Kim finished in second place on Thursday at Ocean View High.
Dechene and Kim, the No. 3 seeds, lost to the top-seeded team from Garden Grove in the finals.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Edison 14, Corona del Mar 11: Ali Bryant scored five goals for the Chargers in Thursday’s Sunset League game at CdM.
Sydney Hoggard added four goals for Edison (9-5, 3-1 in league), and Anna Beachner scored twice. Cailien Gorsuch made eight saves.
Bella Grace led CdM (12-5, 1-4) with five goals, while Abby Grace and Amanda Cord each scored twice. Ellie Spotts made five saves.
Newport Harbor 13, Los Alamitos 11: Olivia Gritzmacher and Joelle Rothbard each scored six goals for the Sailors in Thursday’s Sunset League game at home.
Caroline Close also scored for Newport Harbor (12-5, 4-1 in league), and Lucy Valdes made five saves.
