High School Roundup: Estancia boys’ golf riding long winning streak
Harrison Jones was the co-medalist for the Estancia High School boys’ golf team, which defeated rival Costa Mesa 192-237 on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club.
Jones and Cristopher Rodriguez of Costa Mesa both carded a one-over-par 36 on the front nine of the Mesa Linda Course.
Jack Steadman (37), Quinn Gibson (38), Hayden Jones (40) and Will Thorpe (41) rounded out the scoring group for the victorious Eagles, who improved to 14-1 overall and 10-0 in league.
Estancia has won 14 matches in a row.
Costa Mesa (4-3 overall and in league) also had Joshua Gough (44), Ryan Bourbeau (46), Anthony Fallica (52) and Cole Porter (59) among its scoring five.
GIRLS’ GOLF
Estancia 251, Costa Mesa 266: Sydney Ngo was the medalist for the Mustangs, shooting a two-over-par 37 on the Mesa Linda Course Wednesday in an Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club.
The Eagles claimed the team victory, with Lexi Jaeger (43), Lexi Thorpe (44), Dillon Morgan (49), Danielle Breitweiser (55) and Teegan Dunham (60) factoring into the scoring.
Following Ngo into the clubhouse for the Mustangs were Haven Aguilar (52), Grace Wilborn (54), Bella Rice (56), Kamea Binnquist (67) and Holliday Dietrich (72).
Estancia improved to 8-1 overall and in league, while Costa Mesa is now 4-4 on the season in exclusively league matches.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Laguna Beach 57, Edison 45: Nolan Naess scored 23 points for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Surf League game at Edison High.
Jackson Sirianni added 14 points for undefeated Laguna Beach (11-0, 3-0 in league).
Edison (7-4, 1-2) was paced by Bradley Luna, who scored 11 points.
Marina 65, Corona del Mar 61: Kylle Magdangal scored 20 points for the Vikings in Wednesday’s Wave League game at Corona del Mar High.
Eric Hodgkins added 19 points for Marina (8-4, 2-1 in league) .
Sanjay Tewari scored a team-best 20 points for CdM (4-6, 0-3).
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Pacifica Christian Orange County 70, Downey Calvary Chapel 28: Junior Nola Mihaly-Garvin had a team-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds and five steals to lead the Tritons on Wednesday in an Academy League game at home.
Freshman Annika Jiwani approached a triple-double with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and freshman Lauryn Ham added 15 points and seven steals for Pacifica Christian (8-3, 3-0).
Pacifica Christian opposes Capistrano Valley Christian at home on Friday at 6 p.m.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Newport Harbor 1, Huntington Beach 0: A first-half goal was all the visiting Sailors needed to propel themselves to the win in the Wave League championship match on Wednesday at Huntington Beach High.
Anthony Vasquez scored the goal for Newport Harbor (10-4-2, 5-1), which won its last four games, including an overtime victory against Laguna Beach earlier this week en route to sweeping the back half of league play.
Goalkeeper Briant Alvarez made several key saves to preserve the shutout for the Sailors.
Huntington Beach (11-2-2, 4-2) came into the match ranked fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll.
Los Alamitos 4, Corona del Mar 0: The Sea Kings dropped their Surf League finale on the road Wednesday, falling to 4-11-3 overall and 1-5 in league this season.
The Griffins (8-6, 5-1) earned a share of the Surf League title with Edison, which earned a 2-0 win at Fountain Valley in its final regular-season match on Wednesday.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Marina 1, Laguna Beach 0: Kaitlyn Paculba scored as the host Vikings spoiled the Breakers’ Wave League title hopes in the league finale Wednesday.
Laguna Beach, which could have clinched the league title with a win, finished the regular season 6-4 overall, 4-2 in league. Newport Harbor (9-2-4, 4-1-1) won the outright league title.
Marina (9-3-3, 3-2-1) finished third.
BASEBALL
Ocean View 7, Segerstrom 0: Brandon Wood threw a two-hit shutout for the Seahawks in Wednesday’s Golden West League game at Ocean View High.
Ocean View improved to 11-6-1 overall, and 3-0 in league.
