High School Roundup: CdM girls’ basketball hands rival Newport Harbor first loss

Makena Tomlinson had 21 points to lead the Corona del Mar High School girls’ basketball team to a 58-36 win over visiting Newport Harbor on Tuesday in the Battle of the Bay game.

Trasara Alexander also scored 17 points for CdM (7-4) in the Sunset Conference crossover matchup. Dorothy Schwenck had 13 points, including four shots made from behind the three-point line.

Cydney Jover paced Newport Harbor (5-1) with nine points. Emma Fults had eight points and five rebounds, and Willa Rath compiled four points, five rebounds and five blocked shots.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 76, Saddleback 40: Nathan Shipper had 15 points, four assists and four steals for the Mustangs in their Orange Coast League opener Tuesday at Costa Mesa High.

Christian Dasca scored 15 points and dished out five assists for Costa Mesa (4-6). Gio Quero had 14 points and five assists.

Aiden Spallone and Jordan Martin each scored 12 points for the Mustangs, who host crosstown rival Estancia in the first Battle for the Bell game on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 1, Edison 0: Devyn Greer struck out 11 batters in throwing a four-hit shutout for the host Oilers on Tuesday in a Surf League opener.

Grace Grundstrom drove in the game’s only run for Huntington Beach (10-1).

Emma Mendoza had two hits, and Jenna Gorden and Bella Espinoza each had one hit for Edison (3-6). Kaitlyn Reynolds allowed three hits, struck out three and walked none in getting the start for the Chargers.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Marina 3, Fountain Valley 0: The host Vikings remained unbeaten in Wave League action with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 sweep of the Barons on Tuesday night.

Marina improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 180, Marina 186: Ben Crinella shot a two-under-par 33 to lead Edison to victory in a Sunset Conference crossover match on Tuesday at Willowick Golf Course.

Jack Krueger also was one under par for his round for the Chargers (11-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Newport Harbor 4: Sophia Andrei-Birca swept in singles for the Sea Kings in the Battle of the Bay match Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

Alden Mulroy and Lauren Jones swept in doubles for CdM (10-1, 2-1 in the Surf League).

Newport Harbor is now 6-9 overall and 0-3 in league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Marina 3, Corona del Mar 0: Kaitlyn Paculba, Lexi Van Horn and Abby Kirby all scored for the Vikings in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Marina High.

The Vikings improved to 6-3-2 overall, while CdM fell to 5-5-2.

Newport Harbor 1, Huntington Beach 1: Brielle Benedict scored on Aly Thomas’ assist as the Sailors earned the tie Tuesday at Huntington Beach High in a Sunset Conference crossover match.

Newport Harbor is now 8-1-2, while Huntington Beach is 5-7-1.

Orange Lutheran 2, Pacifica Christian Orange County 0: The Tritons gave up two second-half goals in Tuesday’s nonleague match at Orange County Great Park.

Pacifica Christian (8-2-1) plays at Samueli Academy on Friday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Edison 14, Yorba Linda 3: Sydney Hoggard had six goals and an assist to lead the Chargers in Tuesday’s nonleague home match.

Ali Bryant had two goals and two assists, while Rylee Siegel, Alyssa Hesse, Melanie Wieland, Natalie Halpin, Madison Kruis and Anna Beachner also scored. Gwen Ontiveros and Bohuen Tong had assists.

Goalkeeper Cailien Gorsuch had four saves for Edison (4-2).

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Huntington Beach 112, Corona del Mar 57: The Oilers moved to 7-0 in dual meets this season after Tuesday’s win in a Sunset Conference crossover meet.

Huntington Beach opens the Wave League when it hosts Edison on April 27.

CdM (1-1) hosts Los Alamitos on April 27 to start Surf League competition.
