High School Roundup: Gottlieb powers Newport Harbor softball to win

Eliana Gottlieb had four hits and drove in five runs for the Newport Harbor High School softball team on Tuesday in an 11-0 victory over Calvary Chapel in a Savanna Showcase game at home.

Gottlieb had a double and a home run as part of her big day at the plate. Lindsey Blanchfield had two hits, and Lily Larkins had a double for the Sailors (4-1).

Ava Nolan and Gabriella DiFrancesco combined to allow one hit and strike out four batters to keep the shutout intact.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Liberty Christian 0: Matthew MacPherson had 12 service aces to lead the visiting Tritons on Tuesday in a nonleague match.

Pacifica Christian (4-2) has won three in a row. The Tritons play at St. Margaret’s on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Newport Harbor 9, West Covina South Hills 4: Trent Liolios got the win for the undefeated Sailors in Tuesday’s Newport Elks Tournament game at home.

Liolios pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out four for Newport Harbor (4-0), while Nick Regatz got the save. Will O’Neil and Jackson Gilles each hit two home runs for the winners.

Newport Harbor improved to 3-0 in the tournament.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Huntington Beach 118, Newport Harbor 52: Huntington Beach coach Ryan Camps said the Oilers beat the Sailors for the first time in program history in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover meet at Newport Harbor High.

Huntington Beach senior Chase Dodd won the 500-yard freestyle in four minutes 45.48 seconds, and finished second in the 200 free in 1:45.32. His brother, freshman Ryder Dodd, was second in the 500 free (4:46.84) and also won the 100 butterfly (52.04) for Huntington Beach, which improved to 4-0.

Oilers junior Caden Cunningham won the 50 free (21.55) and the 100 free (47.56). Sophomore Hudson Ruth won the 100 back in 57.41.

Both Dodd brothers, Cunningham and Jayden Leiva combined to win the 400 free relay.

Finn Genc won the 200 IM in 2:05.01 for Newport Harbor.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Huntington Beach 14, Laguna Beach 4: Kaytlin Taylor swept in singles for the Oilers in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Solaya Han and Ella Weisman swept in doubles for Huntington Beach (7-0).

Sarah MacCallum won twice in singles for Laguna Beach (5-2).

Corona del Mar 14, Fountain Valley 4: Hannah Jervis and Tori Varela both swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Reece Kenerson and Jane Paulson swept in doubles for CdM (7-1).

Fountain Valley fell to 8-2.

Estancia 10, Ocean View 8: The Eagles rallied from a 4-2 first-round deficit to win Tuesday’s nonleague road match.

Coach Mike Moorewood said a balanced singles and doubles attack has helped Estancia (2-1) early in the season.

Ocean View is now 3-7.
