Estancia’s Desiree Mendoza repeats as Orange Coast League girls’ soccer MVP
Estancia High senior forward Desiree Mendoza has earned the Orange Coast League girls’ soccer MVP award for the second straight year.
Costa Mesa freshman forward Itzel Ramirez earned league Offensive MVP honors after helping the Mustangs repeat as league champions, while Costa Mesa freshman defensive center midfielder Isabel Whittaker was the league’s Defensive MVP.
Mendoza, bound for UC Irvine, finished the season with 10 goals and 15 assists. She helped the Eagles (10-7-3, 7-1-2 in league) finish second in the league and advance to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs, where Estancia lost 2-1 to top-seeded Hemet.
Ramirez scored 22 goals in the regular season for Costa Mesa (13-7-2, 8-0-2), and had 13 goals and six assists in league play. Whittaker was key on defense for the Mustangs, who allowed just seven goals in the 10 league matches.
Costa Mesa also advanced to the second round of the Division 4 playoffs before losing 5-3 to Hacienda Heights Wilson.
First-team all-league players included Costa Mesa senior center back Vanessa Carrillo, sophomore defender Daisy Carrillo, senior midfielder Saharai Aguilar and senior forward Natalia Guzman.
Estancia senior defender Wendy Milan, junior midfielder Anika Scott and freshman defender Elly Goan also earned first-team accolades.
Costa Mesa sophomore midfielder Brianna Calderon, senior midfielder Lani Whittaker and junior goalkeeper Aubrey Hallman earned second-team honors, as did Estancia senior forward Leslie Zuniga and junior defender Crystal Arellano.
