High School Roundup: Fountain Valley boys’ basketball stuns Gardena in CIF SoCal Regional Division III opener

Jeremiah Davis finished with 31 points and seven rebounds, leading the No. 14-seeded Fountain Valley High boys’ basketball team to a 66-63 upset win at No. 2 Gardena on Tuesday in a CIF State Southern California Regional Division III playoff opener.

The Barons (20-9) will play in the regional quarterfinal at No. 10 Los Angeles Price (25-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Fountain Valley’s Preston Amarillo had 14 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, and Roddie Anderson added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

San Diego Cathedral Catholic 2, Edison 0: The Chargers’ season ended on the road Tuesday in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division I playoffs.

Edison finished 14-6-4.

BASEBALL

Marina 10, Trabuco Hills 6: Rocco Peppi went three for three with a home run, a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored for the visiting Vikings in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Gavin Langer hit a two-run homer for Marina (5-4). David Mashburn was three for four with two doubles, an RBI and three runs.

Trevor Lanksbury struck out six in four innings and earned the win, while Chad Lux got the nine-out save.

JSerra 3, Huntington Beach 1: Ralph Velazquez had a hit and drove in a run for the Oilers in the second game of a doubleheader on the road Tuesday.

Gage Jump struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings for the Lions, who have beaten Huntington Beach three times this season.

Huntington Beach (5-3) lost 6-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Oilers also lost to JSerra 3-2 in the Newport Elks Tournament Frank Lerner Division title game on Friday in Irvine.

Sage Hill 6, Downey Calvary Chapel 5: Rowan Schneider hit a walk-off two-run triple for the Lightning on Tuesday in a nonleague game at home.

Sage Hill is now 2-0.

Los Amigos 7, Lakewood Artesia 2: Joseph Mena had four hits for the visiting Lobos, who won their third consecutive game on Tuesday.

Los Amigos is 3-5.

Sunny Hills 10, Costa Mesa 9: Luis Munoz had two hits and four RBIs in the Mustangs’ nonleague game on the road Tuesday.

Chris Hall added two hits and three RBIs for Costa Mesa (1-4).

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 19, Costa Mesa 0 (5 innings): Clare Austin, Kat Metcalf and McKayla Cotton combined on the no-hitter for the visiting Sailors, who won their third straight game on Tuesday.

Eliana Gottlieb was three for five with three runs batted in, and Metcalf, Lindsey Blanchfield and Kori Villeneuve each hit a home run for Newport Harbor (3-3).

Edison 8, Mission Viejo 2: Shelby Saffell went three for four with four RBIs for the Chargers in Tuesday’s nonleague game on the road.

Talia Hannappel went the distance for Edison (5-1), striking out seven and allowing four hits.

Corona del Mar 13, Garden Grove 1: Makena Tomlinson homered twice and drove in seven runs for the host Sea Kings in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Sydney Walls was two for four with two RBIs and three runs scored for CdM (1-1). Trasara Alexander had a double, two RBIs and three runs.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach 3, Servite 1: Niko Colburn had 14 kills in the Oilers’ 25-18, 29-27, 21-25, 25-23 win in Tuesday’s nonleague match at home.

Noah Robin added eight kills and four blocks for Huntington Beach (10-2). Trent Douphner had seven kills.

Newport Harbor 3, Tesoro 0: The Sailors improved to 9-4 with Tuesday’s 26-24, 25-22, 25-15 sweep on the road Tuesday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Newport Harbor 205, Santa Margarita 214: Caden Dewey shot a one-over-par 38 for the Sailors, earning the individual medalist honor in a nonleague match on the Los Lagos Course at Costa Mesa Country Club on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor’s Sam Thayer finished with a 39, followed by Nick Thayer (41), John Herold (43) and Carter Shannon (44).

Ocean View 202, Laguna Beach 210: Reilly Kells was the individual medalist after shooting a 38 in the Seahawks’ season opener on Tuesday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 8, Los Alamitos 4: The visiting Sailors opened Sunset League play with a victory on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor is 4-1 overall.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

San Clemente 15, Edison 9: The Chargers dropped to 3-2 following Tuesday’s nonleague loss at home.
