College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball tops UC Santa Barbara for sixth straight win
Eyassu Worku had 20 points as the UC Irvine men’s basketball team beat UC Santa Barbara 69-58 in a Big West Conference game Saturday night at Bren Events Center.
Brad Greene added 16 points and 15 rebounds for UC Irvine, which had already clinched the outright conference regular-season championship. Tommy Rutherford scored 13 points for the Anteaters (21-10, 13-2 in conference), who won their sixth straight game.
UCI closes out the regular season with a home game against Cal State Northridge on Wednesday.
The Master’s 79, Vanguard 71: Isaiah Gentry scored 21 points for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference home game.
Phillip Willis added 20 points for Vanguard (13-17, 6-12 in conference).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Master’s 59, Vanguard 46: Vanessa Murphy had 17 points for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season finale Saturday at home.
The Lions (22-5, 14-4 in conference) begin play in the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine 12, San Diego State 8: Tara Prentice matched a career-high with five goals to lead the Anteaters in Saturday’s nonconference home match.
No. 5 UC Irvine improved to 13-5.
BASEBALL
UC Irvine 9, Washington 0: Peter Van Loon pitched seven shutout innings for his first win of the season for the Anteaters in Saturday’s nonconference road game.
Adrian Damla hit a two-run home run for UC Irvine (5-5), and Mike Peabody had three hits including a triple and scored three runs. Josh Sheck had two hits and drove in three.
Orange Coast 9, Canyons 4: Chase Hanson had three hits and two runs batted in to lead the host Pirates on Saturday in a nonconference game.
Matt Maloney added two hits and two runs batted in for Orange Coast (9-6). Jared Schatz reached base five times out of the leadoff spot with a pair of hits and three walks.
The Pirates have won seven games in a row.
Vanguard 8, Hope International 1: Aki Buckson was three for five with a run batted in for the Lions in the first game of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Vanguard.
Landon Riker, Chad Sutton and Grady Conner all had two hits for the Lions (16-6, 5-3 in conference). Wyatt Boyce improved to 1-1, allowing one earned run over six innings.
Hope International 13, Vanguard 4: Grady Conner was two for four with a pair of doubles for the Lions, but the visiting Royals earned the split of Saturday’s doubleheader.
SOFTBALL
Vanguard 15, San Diego Christian 0 (five innings): Vanguard’s Tatiana Tabizon was two for three with a double and a home run in the first game of Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader on the road.
Vanessa Dwyer and Paige Peterson combined on the shutout in the circle for the Lions (18-4, 2-0 in conference).
Vanguard 16, San Diego Christian 0 (five innings): Tatiana Tabizon had four hits and four runs batted in as the Lions earned the doubleheader sweep.
Cassie Balswick had three hits and three runs scored for the winners.
Santa Barbara 16, Orange Coast 0 (five innings): The Pirates were held to one hit by Carson Dunckley on Saturday in a nonconference game at home.
Jaelyn Operana had a hit and a stolen base for Orange Coast (2-6). Ashley Boss and Caitlyn Sideris each drew a walk.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Vanguard 3, UC Merced 0: Kyle Anema had 17 kills for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 win on the road.
Christian Nowtash added 11 kills for Vanguard (10-5, 6-2 in conference), and Dylan Garcia had 10 kills. Bryce Thompson dished out 41 assists.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
UC Irvine 9, UC Santa Cruz 0: The Anteaters improved to 5-4 after winning Saturday’s nonconference road match.
