College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s volleyball ends four-match skid against Grand Canyon

The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team snapped its four-match losing streak with a 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18 nonconference victory over Grand Canyon on Friday night at Bren Events Center.

Alexandre Nsakanda led the Anteaters with 19 kills. Joel Schneidmiller had 13 kills, and Akhil Tangutur added 10 kills and 10 digs.

Patrick Vorenkamp also contributed 36 assists and 11 digs for UCI (8-7).

Menlo 3, Vanguard 2: Kyle Anema had a match-high 29 kills to lead the visiting Lions, but the Oaks earned a 22-25, 30-28, 25-23, 18-25, 15-8 win in Friday’s Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Christian Nowtash and Cody Watts each had nine kills for Vanguard (9-5, 5-2 in conference). Bryce Thompson distributed 54 assists to go with eight total blocks.

Orange Coast 3, San Diego Mesa 0: Caden Satterfield had a team-high seven kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-16, 26-24, 25-9 win on Friday in nonconference play.

Hunter Dickey had six kills for Orange Coast (4-4). Eric Beebe produced 20 assists and three service aces.

Golden West 3, Palomar 0: The host Rustlers swept Friday’s nonconference match 25-22, 25-17, 25-14.

Golden West improved to 5-4 overall.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 7, Hope International 6 (seven innings): The host Lions scored five runs in the fifth inning to notch a comeback victory in the second game of Friday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Designated hitter Aki Buckson and third baseman Chad Sutton each drove in two runs for Vanguard (15-5, 4-2).

In the first game, Vanguard won 18-11. First baseman Joe Johnson went four for five with six runs batted in to lead the Lions.

Vanguard’s Johnson had a pair of home runs. Center fielder Landon Riker drove in four runs and scored four runs. Left fielder Isaiah Lee added three RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Riverside 4, Golden West 1: Catcher Jasmine Vasquez had two hits and a run batted in for the visiting Rustlers on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Designated player Lali Rios had a hit and a walk for Golden West (8-8, 1-4 in conference).
