High School Roundup: Fountain Valley’s Max Wilner advances to CIF State wrestling quarterfinals

Fountain Valley High 160-pounder Max Wilner earned two pins and one major decision win on the first day of the CIF State wrestling championships Thursday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Wilner, the No. 3 seed, will face No. 6-seeded Trent Silva of Windsor in the championship quarterfinals Friday.

Fountain Valley has four other wrestlers alive in the consolation brackets Friday. Sean Solis is 2-1 at 113 pounds, TJ McDonnell is 2-1 at 138 pounds, Luis Ramirez is 1-1 at 145 pounds and Matthew Fee is 1-1 at 220 pounds.

Corona del Mar’s Emilio Franco went 1-1 at 220 pounds and will compete in the consolation bracket Friday, as will Estancia’s Jacob Potts, who lost by pin at 195 pounds in his lone match Thursday.

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

CIF State championships: Edison’s Angela De La Cruz won twice at 106 pounds on Thursday to advance to the championship quarterfinals at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

De La Cruz will face Calexico’s Karen Salais.

Other locals alive in the consolation bracket include Marina’s Kaelani Shufeldt (1-1 at 101 pounds), Huntington Beach’s Alexandra Lopez (0-1 at 131 pounds) and Chloe Palacios (0-1 at 143 pounds), as well as Costa Mesa’s Breanne Raya (0-1 at 189 pounds).

BASEBALL

Fountain Valley 3, Servite 0: Jake Brooks threw a complete-game shutout for the host Barons in Thursday’s Loara Tournament game.

Brooks allowed five hits and struck out four for the Barons (5-1). Sebastian Murillo had a two-run single.

Edison 5, Ocean View 5 (eight innings): The Loara Tournament game was called due to darkness Thursday at Edison.

Mulivai Levu, Shane Hoodman, Jimmy Legg and Jack Rockefeller all had two hits for Ocean View (2-4-1).

Tyler Weaver was two for three with a home run, a double and three runs batted in for Edison (3-2-1).

La Mirada 2, Marina 1: David Mashburn and Zane Parmenter each had two hits for the Vikings in Thursday’s Loara Tournament game at Brookhurst Community Park.

Marina is now 4-3.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 1, Chino Hills Ayala 1: Shelbi Ortiz was two for three with a run scored for the Oilers in Thursday’s SoCal’s Best Invitational game at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.

Devyn Greer allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings for Huntington Beach (2-0-2).

Segerstrom 3, Newport Harbor 2: Kendall Kelly went two for two with a double and run batted in for the Sailors in a Savanna Showcase game on the road Thursday.

Alexis Amaro had two hits for Newport Harbor (0-3).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Mater Dei 3, Huntington Beach 2: The visiting Oilers suffered their first setback of the season, as the Monarchs held on for a 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8 win in Thursday’s nonleague match.

Huntington Beach (7-1) opens the Orange County Championships against Woodbridge at Edison High on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 10, San Clemente 8: Logan Friedman, Max Krykunenko and John Dick each won twice in singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s nonleague home match.

Austin Dick and Scott Thompson won twice in doubles for CdM (2-0).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 13, Esperanza 3: Olivia Gritzmacher scored seven goals for the Sailors in Thursday’s nonleague road match.

Joelle Rothbard scored three goals for Newport Harbor (1-1).

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Ocean View 98, Orange 54: Senior Kenny Tran and junior Kevin Wong were individual winners for the Seahawks in Thursday’s nonleague season opener at home.

Tran won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute 1.85 seconds. Wong touched first in the 50 freestyle, in 23.99 seconds. Both were CIF consideration times.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Ocean View 94, Orange 77: Freshman Diane Dao won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Seahawks in Thursday’s nonleague home season opener.

Dao touched in 1 minute 15.85 seconds, a CIF consideration time.

The Ocean View 200 medley relay of Dao, Angie Franzetti, Jessica Lyng and Danielle Singer also won in 2:11.94, another consideration time.
