College Roundup: Orange Coast baseball out-slugs Palomar
Cary Arbolida was five for six with a home run and three runs batted in, and the Orange Coast College baseball team beat Palomar 11-9 on the road Tuesday in a nonconference game.
Jared Schatz was four for five with four RBIs for OCC (8-6). Michael Ryhlick allowed three earned runs over five innings to improve to 2-1 for the Pirates, while Kelly Austin earned his third save.
The Pirates host College of the Canyons on Saturday at noon.
San Diego State 2, UC Irvine 1: Jake Palmer was two for five with a double for the Anteaters in Tuesday’s nonconference home game.
Jacob Castro had a pinch-hit double and scored the run for UC Irvine (4-4).
San Diego State improved to 6-2.
UC Irvine starts a three-game series at Washington on Friday at 6:05 p.m.
Grossmont 11, Vanguard 8: Justin Simpson, Luke Chung and Seth Nelson each drove in two runs for the host Rustlers on Tuesday in a nonleague game.
Noah Amenta and Vinny Tosti also had two hits apiece for Golden West (7-9).
SOFTBALL
Vanguard 4, University of Saint Katherine 2: Johanna Lewis and Mia Palomino each had a double for the Lions in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.
Taylor Radtke, Howard and Lewis each had a run batted in for Vanguard (15-3).
Courtney Thornhill (8-1) earned the win in the circle. She allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits. She struck out two and walked none.
The Lions won 8-0 in the first game, which went five innings. Jenah Tittle drove in two runs, Emily Howard had two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored, and Tatiana Tabizon homered.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Concordia 3, UC Irvine 1: Joel Schneidmiller and Alexandre Nsakanda each had 16 kills for the Anteaters, but the host Eagles earned a 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 nonconference win Tuesday.
Patrick Vorenkamp had 36 assists for UC Irvine (7-7), which has lost four straight matches.
WOMEN’S GOLF
The Gold Rush tournament: UC Irvine’s Madison Riggs finished tied for 10th on Tuesday at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach.
Riggs shot 77 on the final day, and had a three-day total of 221.
The Anteaters finished 11th as a team with a score of 935 in the tournament, won by Georgia.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Irvine Valley 7, Orange Coast 2: The Pirates dropped Tuesday’s Orange Empire Conference match on the road.
OCC fell to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
MEN’S TENNIS
Irvine Valley 8, Orange Coast 1: The Pirates dropped their Orange Empire Conference opener at home Tuesday.
OCC is now 4-5 overall.
