High School Roundup: Fountain Valley boys’ basketball falls at Shadow Hills in CIF Division 3A semifinals

Jeremiah Davis had 22 points for the Fountain Valley High boys’ basketball team in a 82-70 loss at Indio Shadow Hills in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs Saturday night.

Aden Casarez added 16 points for No. 3-seeded Fountain Valley (19-9), making its first CIF semifinal appearance in program history. Roddie Anderson scored 14 points, and Preston Amarillo had 11 points.

No. 2-seeded Shadow Hills (28-3) advanced to play Los Angeles Price in the Division 3A title game.

The season isn’t over for Fountain Valley, which qualified for the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Upland 2, Edison 0: The Chargers gave up two second-half goals at the top-seeded Highlanders in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Saturday night.

Edison (14-5-4) was making its first CIF semifinal appearance since 2014.

The Chargers will compete next in the CIF State Southern California Regional playoffs.

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

A total of five locals placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes in the CIF Southern Section girls’ individual wrestling championships on Saturday at Beaumont High.

By virtue of their placing, they have advanced to the CIF State wrestling championships, which will be held at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield from Feb. 27-29.

Costa Mesa junior Breanne Raya was the area’s top placer, finishing third at 189 pounds. Raya went 5-1 in the tournament, recording four pins and a decision. She improved to 27-7 on the season.

Huntington Beach will be sending sophomore Alexandra Lopez (fourth, 131) and senior Chloe Palacios (fifth, 143).

Marina sophomore Kaelani Shufeldt (seventh, 101) and Edison junior Angela De La Cruz (sixth, 106) also advanced.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Tesoro Tournament

The Huntington Beach High, Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor boys’ volleyball teams advanced to the semifinals of the Tesoro Tournament on Saturday.

Laguna Beach earned wins over Temecula Great Oak (25-5, 25-10), Capistrano Valley (25-8, 25-11) and Long Beach Wilson (25-21, 25-20) in pool play. In the Round of 16, the Breakers beat Northwood (25-17, 25-21). Laguna Beach edged Santa Margarita 23-25, 26-24, 15-12 in the quarterfinals.

Huntington Beach beat JSerra, University and Trabuco Hills in pool play, before fending off Beckman and Dana Hills in elimination matches.

Newport Harbor defeated Portola, Yorba Linda and Bellflower St. John Bosco in its pool. The Sailors then went on to beat Long Beach Wilson and Los Alamitos in straight sets.

Huntington Beach will face Laguna Beach in the first semifinal on Monday at 4 p.m. at Tesoro High. Newport Harbor will square off with San Clemente in the second semifinal match at 5 p.m.

The Gold Division championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 7, Gahr 0: Shane Stafford pitched four shutout innings for the Oilers in the Newport Elks Tournament Frank Lerner Division game Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

Jake Vogel had a pair of hits for Huntington Beach (3-0), which continues the tournament at home against Los Angeles Loyola on Monday at 3 p.m.

Marina 6, Servite 4: David Mashburn was two for three with a double, a triple and two runs batted in for the Vikings in Saturday’s Loara Tournament game at Marina High.

Lucas Iorgulescu was two for three with a double and four RBIs for Marina (3-2). Freshman left-handed pitcher Collin Miskelly earned the win with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
