College Roundup: Trenton Denholm dominant as UC Irvine baseball beats Rice in home opener
Trenton Denholm did not allow a hit over seven innings, and the UC Irvine baseball team defeated Rice 10-1 in its home opener on Friday night.
Denholm struck out six and walked one in the start.
Mike Peabody had a home run and two runs batted in for the Anteaters (2-3). Adrian Damla and Jake Palmer each had two hits and two RBIs.
Menlo 11, Vanguard 10: Aki Buckson had a home run and three runs batted in for the visiting Lions on Friday in a Golden State Athletic Conference opener.
Josh Weeks had a hit, three walks and scored two runs for Vanguard (11-4). Grady Conner also scored two runs.
Orange Coast 12, Canyons 8: Cary Arbolida hit two home runs and drove in three runs for the visiting Pirates on Friday in a nonconference game.
Ryan O’Halloran also had three RBIs for Orange Coast (7-6). Chase Hanson and Nolan Funke had two hits apiece.
SOFTBALL
Santiago Canyon 3, Golden West 1: Kaylee Canto had a double and a run scored for the Rustlers on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game at home.
Golden West fell to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego 3, UC Irvine 0: Alexandre Nsakanda paced the visiting Anteaters with eight kills on Friday in a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 loss in the back half of a home-and-home set.
Scott Stadick had seven kills and three blocks for UCI (7-6).
Cal State Northridge 3, Vanguard 0: Kyle Anema had a team-high 16 kills for the visiting Lions, who were swept 25-17, 25-21, 37-35 on Friday in a nonconference match.
Bryce Thompson produced 31 assists with five digs for Vanguard (8-4). Cody Watts had eight kills.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
UC Irvine 12, Long Beach State 9: Tara Prentice had three goals and three assists for the host Anteaters on Friday in a Barbara Kalbus Invitational match.
Megan Falcon and Toni Shackelford had two goals for UCI (10-4). Morgan Jones made 11 saves to go with three steals and two assists.
MEN’S GOLF
Senior Anthony Truong and sophomore Parker Lestz each shot one-over 73 to lead the Anteaters on Friday in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course in Hawaii.
UC Irvine dropped to 14th in the standings with a two-day total of 591. The Anteaters are one stroke behind Long Beach State.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Vanguard 5, University of Saint Katherine 0: The host Lions swept the Firebirds on Friday in their season opener in Huntington Beach.
The pairings of Gabby Morrison and Conley Harris, Kolby Bird and Kelli Dowell, Shay Larsen-Piper and Kayla Tinker, Eliana Johnson and Karly Cantu, and Emilee Hall and Sydney Irwin competed for Vanguard.
Loyola Marymount 5, Vanguard 0: Vanguard split Friday’s season-opening tri-match.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Santa Ana 109, Orange Coast 86: Andres Ortega paced the visiting Pirates with 23 points on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.
Aundrel Pua added 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for Orange Coast (5-23, 2-14 in conference). Jonathan Ileleji scored 16 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Santa Ana 87, Orange Coast 44: Violet Cisneros had a team-high 22 points to go with 14 rebounds for the host Pirates on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.
Cristal Hernandez had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Orange Coast (2-24, 0-13 in conference). Gracelynn Figueroa and Lea Adame had five points each.
Cypress 74, Golden West 34: The host Rustlers concluded the regular season at 6-20 overall and 3-11 in the Orange Empire Conference with Friday’s defeat.
