High School Roundup: Costa Mesa, Marina girls’ water polo teams advance to CIF title matches

Kira Anderson finished with three goals, and the Costa Mesa High girls’ water polo team advanced to its first CIF Southern Section title match by beating Temecula Valley 8-4 in a Division 5 semifinal Wednesday at Temecula Chaparral High.

The top-seeded Mustangs (24-6) will play No. 2 Whittier California in the final Saturday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center, at a time to be determined.

Michelle Kiefer and Sey Currie each scored twice for Costa Mesa, which outscored Temecula Valley 5-1 in the second half. Taiuta Uiagalelei added one goal, and goalkeeper Malia Tufuga had eight saves.

Marina 8, El Modena 7: Taylor Lambert scored four goals for the No. 3-seeded Vikings in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoff semifinal playoff match Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.

Makenna Reynolds added two goals for Marina (20-11), which made its first CIF final since 1998. Lana Kardos and Rianna Gear added one goal each, and goalkeeper Emma Marsh made 18 saves.

The Vikings will play La Cañada Flintridge Prep in the title match Saturday at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center, at a time to be determined.

Glendora 8, Edison 7: Delaney Lewellyn had two goals for the Chargers in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Wednesday at Segerstrom High.

Ashley Hogan, Adrianna Rodriguez, Bella Schulze, Lily Worley and Sam Worley each scored a goal for Edison (18-13), which made its first semifinal appearance.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 1, Long Beach Poly 0: Jackie Peterson’s second-half goal lifted the Chargers in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Wednesday on the road.

The Poly goalkeeper was unable to handle Nicole Field’s hard shot, and Peterson put away the rebound goal for Edison (14-5-4).

Edison’s defense of goalkeeper Allyssa Plotkin and the back line of Abby McCollam, Kelli McKay, Sophia Drake, Lucy Granger and Alexa Palombo earned the Chargers’ 15th shutout of the season.

Edison will play at top-seeded Upland in the semifinals Saturday. Upland defeated Studio City Harvard-Westlake 2-1 in overtime in another quarterfinal match.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Edison 15, El Modena 1: The host Chargers earned a blowout victory in their season opener.
