High School Roundup: Edison, Costa Mesa, Marina girls’ water polo teams advance to CIF semifinals

Lily Worley scored three goals as the Edison High girls’ water polo team upset No. 2-seeded Downey 7-6 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Saturday at Corona del Mar High.

Delaney Lewelyn scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, for the Chargers (18-13). Sam Worley and Ella Jensen had one goal each.

Edison, making its first CIF semifinals apperance, will play No. 2-seeded Glendora in the semifinals Wednesday.

Costa Mesa 8, Hacienda Heights Los Altos 7 (OT): Taiuta Uiagelelei scored the eventual game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the Mustangs to the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoff quarterfinal win Saturday.

Uiagelelei led the top-seeded Mustangs (23-6) with four goals. Kira Anderson added three goals and two assists, and Sey Currie also scored.

Goalkeeper Dharma Andreas made eight saves for Costa Mesa, which advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history.

Costa Mesa plays on the road against Temecula Valley in the Division 5 semifinals Wednesday.

Marina 9, Pasadena 6: Goalkeeper Emma Marsh made 23 saves for the Vikings in Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoff quarterfinal match at Westminster High.

Lily Ensley and Lana Kardos each scored three goals for the No. 3-seeded Vikings (19-11), who advanced to the playoff semifinals for the first time since 1998. Maddie Clobes scored twice, and Kaylee Schiebergen also had a goal.

Marina hosts No. 2-seeded El Modena in the semifinals Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Costa Mesa High.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 0, Santa Margarita 0 (Edison wins 5-3 in PKs): Alexa Palombo, Nicole Field, Jackie Peterson, Nikki Marino and Morgan Roberts each scored penalty-kick goals for the Chargers on Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

The Edison back line of Abby McCollam, Kelli McKay, Sophia Drake, Lucy Granger and Palombo helped produce the Chargers’ 14th shutout of the season.

Edison (13-5-4) will play Long Beach Poly in the Division 1 quarterfinals Wednesday on the road.

Marina 2, Brea Olinda 1: McKenna Pua and Haley Boren each scored second-half goals as the Vikings earned a comeback road win Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Marina (11-8-3) will host Capistrano Valley in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Palos Verdes 2, Laguna Beach 0: The Breakers’ season ended after the shutout home loss Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

Laguna Beach finished 7-6-6 overall.

Hacienda Heights Wilson 5, Costa Mesa 3: The Mustangs (13-8-2) fell in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs Saturday at home.

Chatsworth Sierra Canyon 2, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks (13-12-1) fell at the No.-2 seeded team Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Hemet 2, Estancia 1: The Eagles lost to the top seed at home Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Estancia finished the season 10-8-3.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Studio City Harvard-Westlake 67, Huntington Beach 37: Kiki Iriafen had a game-high 30 points to lead the top-seeded Wolverines in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs on Saturday night at home.

Marisa Tanga had 10 points, three steals and three rebounds for Huntington Beach (23-6), which repeated as the Surf League champion this season.

Madeline Krause added eight points and a blocked shot. Andie Payne also had seven points and one block for the Oilers.

Corona del Mar 48, South Torrance 42: Trasara Alexander led all scorers with 22 points, as the Sea Kings upset the No. 4-seeded Spartans on Saturday night in the second round of the Division 3AA playoffs.

Dorothy Schwenck had six points on two three-pointers for CdM (23-7). Tori Gyselaar also had six points, and Nia Halafuka and Makena Tomlinson each had five points.

The Sea Kings play the winner of San Juan Hills and Lancaster in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 44, Sage Hill 42: The host Lightning narrowly missed out on upsetting the No. 2-seeded Mustangs on Saturday night in the second round of the Division 3AA playoffs.

Sage Hill (17-10) was the third-place team in the San Joaquin League this season.

WRESTLING

Costa Mesa’s Breanne Raya won the 189-pound title in a CIF Southern Section regional tournament on Saturday at El Toro High.

She had three pins en route to winning the weight class, improving her overall record to 22-6 on the season.

In the Coastal Division individual wrestling championships, Jacob Potts placed third at 195 pounds for Estancia.

Potts had two pins and two wins by decision in the tournament.

He advances to the Masters Meet, which will take place at Sonora High on Feb. 21-22.

BASEBALL

Edison 8, Cerritos 3: Cade Liefer was two for three with a double and two runs batted in for the Chargers on Saturday at the Downey tournament.

Liefer also got the save for Edison (1-0). Jack Ross picked up the win, with two scoreless innings of relief.

Tyler Weaver hit a home run for Edison.

Marina 3, Tesoro 1: Chad Lux got the win for the Vikings in the first game of a road doubleheader Saturday.

Trevor Lanksbury hit a two-run single and also got the save for Marina.

Tesoro 6, Marina 1: The Vikings (1-1) dropped the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Laguna Beach 5, Beckman 0: Charlie Pillsbury had two hits and two runs batted in Saturday for the Breakers in their nonleague road win.

Pitchers Aiden Kidd, Brooks Hogenauer and Nick Bonn combined on the shutout for Laguna Beach (1-0).

SOFTBALL

Troy 6, Newport Harbor 0: Lily Larkins reached base twice with a hit and a walk for the Sailors in a Savanna Showcase game on Saturday.

Eliana Gottlieb also had a double for Newport Harbor.

Long Beach Poly 4, Newport Harbor 2: Eliana Gottlieb went two for two with a triple and a walk, but it was not enough for the Sailors on Saturday in a Savanna Showcase game.

Newport Harbor is now 0-2 overall.
