College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball wins at UC Davis

Eyassu Worku had a game-high 19 points, and the UC Irvine men’s basketball team beat UC Davis 80-65 in a Big West Conference road game Thursday night.

Collin Welp had 16 points and 10 rebounds for first-place UC Irvine (13-9, 5-1 in conference), which moved a half-game ahead of idle Hawaii. John Edgar Jr. added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Anteaters host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 75, San Diego Christian 68: Isaiah Gentry had a team-high 24 points for the host Lions on Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Michael Magee contributed nine points and 12 rebounds for Vanguard (12-10, 5-5 in conference). Phillip Willis had 11 points and five rebounds, and Aziz Seck also scored 10 points with five rebounds.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine 3, Concordia 1: Joel Schneidmiller had 22 kills for the Anteaters in a 26-24, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23 nonconference win Thursday at home.

JB Kam had 17 kills for the Anteaters (4-3). Scott Stadick added 11 kills and 10 total blocks.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 78, San Diego Christian 41: Michaella Elad had 22 points, 21 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Lions on Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at home.

Tristen Rollon scored 14 points for Vanguard (15-3, 8-2 in conference). Victoria Chea also had 10 points and 12 assists.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 7, Cerritos 2: The Pirates won their season opener Thursday on the road.

SOFTBALL

Golden West 4, Grossmont 3: Jasmine Vasquez had a triple and run batted in for the Rustlers in Thursday’s nonconference home game.

Madalyn Burton had a double, run scored and an RBI for Golden West (2-1). Michelle Sheedy pitched four shutout innings in relief for her first win of the season.
