College Roundup: Vanguard softball sweeps doubleheader against Marymount California
The Vanguard University softball team earned the first two wins of first-year coach Amber Freeman’s tenure Wednesday, sweeping a road doubleheader against Marymount California University of Rancho Palos Verdes.
The No. 9-ranked Lions (2-2) beat No. 25 Marymount California 1-0 and 7-0.
Vanessa Dwyer pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game, striking out eight. Emily Howard’s single in the fourth inning scored Tatiana Tabizon.
Johanna Lewis, Cassie Balswick and Tabizon each had two hits in the second game. Courtney Thornhill pitched six shutout innings for the win.
Vanguard hosts Chapman University in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
Orange Coast 3, San Bernardino Valley 1: Third baseman Madison LeClaire went two for three with a run batted in for the host Pirates on Wednesday in their season opener.
First baseman Janae Gomez also had two hits for Orange Coast.
Jaelyn Operana, an Edison High alumnus, earned the win. She threw seven innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits while also striking out five. The freshman also had a triple and scored a run.
Caitlyn Sideris, who went to Ocean View, stole a base.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Saddleback 74, Golden West 64: Justin Kirksey had 13 points, four rebounds and three steals for the visiting Rustlers on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference game.
Francis Dogani, Eric Watson and Christian Anderson each scored 11 points for Golden West (3-19, 1-9 in conference). Ricky Briseno also scored nine points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cypress 83, Golden West 58: Abigail Guerrero scored a team-high 20 points to go with five steals, five rebounds and four assists for the visiting Rustlers on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference game.
Rejoyce Balubar-Argueta had 11 points for Golden West (3-15, 0-6 in conference). Roxie Aquino added nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Kimberly Mancillas chipped in with three points and nine rebounds.
Santa Ana 72, Orange Coast 45: Lea Adame led all scorers with 25 points for the visiting Pirates on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference game.
Violet Cisneros and Gracelynn Figueroa each scored nine points for Orange Coast (2-13, 0-2 in conference).
BASEBALL
Long Beach City 14, Orange Coast 5: Second baseman Drew Baltruweit and third baseman Cary Arbolida each had three hits for the visiting Pirates on Wednesday in a nonconference game.
Will Mangurian also had two hits for Orange Coast (0-1).
The Pirates’ season opener against Southwestern on Tuesday was suspended in the top of the ninth inning due to darkness.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
El Camino 3, Golden West 0: Nathan Goode had 14 kills and 13 digs for the visiting Rustlers, who lost 26-24, 26-24, 25-23 on Wednesday in their season opener.
Mark Aparicio provided 24 digs, and Mike Sofley also had 13 kills and six digs for Golden West.
Goode and Aparicio both attended high school at Huntington Beach.
