High School Roundup: Huntington Beach girls’ basketball reaches Nike Tournament of Champions final
Andie Payne had 11 points, six steals and five rebounds to lead the Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team to a 34-21 win over Phoenix (Ariz.) Desert Vista on Friday in a semifinal game of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz.
Huntington Beach’s Akemi Tanga added nine points, and Alyssa Real had eight points. Cassidee Kinslow also scored six points.
The Oilers will play Los Angeles Marlborough in the championship game at Tempe High on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Laguna Beach 12, Mater Dei 5: Morgan Van Alphen, Imani Clemons, Jessie Rose and Nicole Struss each scored two goals on Friday for the visiting Breakers (6-0), the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2 poll.
Rachael Carver had three assists and two steals against the No. 8 Monarchs.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made 11 saves for Laguna Beach, which plays No. 11 Orange Lutheran on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at Newport Harbor High.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Corona del Mar 61, San Clemente 59: Jack Stone had 19 points for the Sea Kings in Friday’s North/South Challenge game at Tesoro High.
Mathys Djomby-Enyawe and Vanis Buckholz each scored 10 points for CdM (8-3). Djomby-Enyawe earned game MVP honors.
Ocean View 64, Pacifica 52: The Seahawks improved to 8-5 after Friday’s Loara Tournament semifinal game.
Ocean View will play Valencia in the title game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Fountain Valley 62, Canyon Springs (Nev.) 54: Jeremiah Davis had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Barons in the Eastbay Division game of the Tarkanian Classic Friday in Las Vegas.
Preston Amarillo added 14 points for Fountain Valley (6-3), and Roddie Anderson scored 11 points. Brad Farnsworth chipped in eight.
Bakersfield Christian 68, Pacifica Christian Orange County 67 (OT): The Tritons fell to 9-3 after dropping Friday’s nonleague game on the road.
Kennedy 58, Marina 42: The Vikings are 7-7 after Friday’s nonleague road loss.
Edison 55, San Diego Rancho Bernardo 50: Connor Collins had 23 points for the Chargers in Thursday’s Maui Invitational game in Hawaii.
Luke Serven added 17 points for Edison (8-4), which advanced to the tournament semifinals against El Toro.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Marina 3, Cerritos 0: Ted Frousiakis, Damian Campos and Eric Church scored goals for the host Vikings on Friday in a nonleague match.
Damiond Mendoza and Pete Frousiakis each had an assist for Marina (3-2-2), which won its third match in a row.
Kyle Miller kept the clean sheet in goal.
Kennedy 2, Fountain Valley 1: Andy Iwaki scored both goals for the visiting Irish in Friday’s nonleague match.
Fountain Valley dropped to 2-3.
WRESTLING
Newport Harbor’s Kai Villasenor (106 pounds) and JJ Perez (220) advanced to the semifinals of the Ed Springs Tournament at Brea Olinda High on Friday.
Caleb Wheeler (106), Jack Jones (126), Aidan Gassel (138) and Cole Reynolds (145) remain alive for a chance to place through the consolation bracket.
